Lois E. Burns

Plymouth Lois E. (Seymour) Burns, formerly of Kingston died on July 25 after along illness. Born Lois Seymour on Aug. 30, 1924, Mrs. Burns assisted her father as a commercial sign painter while growing up in Brockton. After working briefly as a nurse in Cambridge, Mrs. Burns returned to Brockton, where she met and married Robert Burns, a professional baseball player and telephone company worker. They built a house together in Brockton where they raised two children, Laurie and Michael. During World War II, Mrs. Burns traveled the country with her husband's Army Air Corps unit. After her husband was sent to Europe, Mrs. Burns formed a daily Bible study and letter-writing club with 18 other women she met during her travels to pray for the safe return of their husbands. All 19 came back from the war. After the war, Mrs. Burns worked as a drill-press operator, chauffeur and as Brockton's first female school bus driver while raising her children. She and her husband moved to Kingston's Rocky Nook neighborhood, where she lived for more than 50 years. Mrs. Burns battled illness throughout her life, and the experience filled her with compassion for those who were suffering. She became a frequent volunteer at Plymouth's Jordan Hospital and several nursing homes throughout the area. As a coordinator for the Eucharistic Ministry program at St. Peter's Parish in Plymouth, she trained others to bring the Eucharist to homebound and hospitalized parishioners. A devout Catholic with an unshakable faith, Mrs. Burns began a lasting friendship with the Sisters of Divine Providence in Kingston in 1976 and became an associate there in 1984. Throughout her life, Mrs. Burns devoted herself to the church, her many friends and her family. Her quick wit, unstinting honesty and ability to make anyone feel at home made her known and loved wherever she went. Beloved wife of the late Robert J. Burns. Loving mother of Michael R. Burns and his wife Kathleen of Kingston and Laurie E. Rogers and her husband Dr. Thomas Rogers of Plymouth. Grandmother of Robert Rogers, David Rogers and his wife Lindsey, Michael Burns and his wife Maureen and Peter Burns. Funeral from the Cartmell Funeral Home 150 Court St., Plymouth on Tuesday at 10:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Peters Church, Plymouth at 11:00 am.
