Martha Chase Obituary
Martha Chase, 88, of Quincy, passed away on February 15, 2021, at Queen Anne Nursing Home, Hingham. Born October 23, 1932, in Unity, Maine, to Benjamin F, Chase and Hazel L. Wingate Chase, Martha attended school in Unity and graduated from Unity High School. Upon moving to Massachusetts in 1952, she worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance until her retirement. Martha was a beloved member of the Houghs Neck Congregational Church for 50+ years where she served many roles from volunteer to leader in the Pilgrim Fellowship group to Sunday School Superintendent. She also served as a trustee and chair on the church Diaconate and was elected an "Honorary Life Member" in 2016. President of the Mother's Club for two terms, Martha also worked at the annual church fair and walked or manned water/snack stations for the HNCCC 5K walk team. While serving on many committees Martha would never say no when asked to help. She loved participating and lending a hand at the church's Princess Tea, Pirate feast, Fish and Lobster Dinner, Strawberry Festival, Easter Breakfast, yard sales, Live Nativity and Breakfast with Santa events. Martha served on the board of Interfaith Social Service, Inc., and worked at their food bank, worked with the blind and other seniors and at fundraising events. She served on the Nut Island Citizens Advisory Committee on environmental issues for Quincy Bay and in 1998 she received the Distinguished Sr. Citizen award from the Houghs Neck Community Council. Martha enjoyed living on the hill by the water and traveling with her friends from Liberty Mutual including a dream tour of Europe and sailing with Rev. Alicia Corea on week-long windjammer cruises out of Camden Harbor along Maines coast. She also loved boating with her Boston Whaler, playing golf, bowling, playing piano, reading and puzzles. Preceded in death by her parents, brother, Claude "Butch" Chase and his wife Amy of Braintree, two brothers-in-law, Waymon Giggey and Arthur "Butch" Daru., she is survived by 2 sisters, Mary Giggey of Knoxville, Tenn., Lucy Daru of Weymouth, and 2 brothers, Joe Chase and wife Eileen of Quincy, Malcolm Chase and his recently deceased wife Sue of Whitman. She was very close to and loved her many nieces and nephews. Martha leaves behind two dear friends, Dot Connolly and Shirley Harrington. There will be a service celebrating her life June 12, at 11 am at Houghs Neck Congregational Church.
