Garret Moses

BENNINGTON, VT-- Garret Moses, 89, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, died October 13, 2011, of heart failure at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. Prior to moving to Bennington, he was a resident of New London, NH.
Born in Washington, DC, on Jan. 22, 1922, he was the son of Brig. Gen. Raymond George Moses and Marjorie Louise Bush Moses of Sandwich, NH. He was predeceased by his wife Judith Kiff Moses in 1995 and brother Col. John Wills Moses in 2005.
Growing up in an Army family, he enjoyed travel and became fluent in French while attending grade school in Paris. He attended Princeton University until he withdrew in good standing to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II and served from 1942-1946, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. He graduated with a B.S. in economics from Babson College in 1949 and then worked for many years in the insurance industry in Boston. He was honored as "Man of the Year" while employed at the Union Central Life Insurance Company. In 1969 he married Judith Kiff and they moved to New London, NH, where he continued to work in the insurance industry.
A lifelong athlete, he excelled as a tennis player and remained very active throughout his life. He was a man of faith who loved the Lord. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and remembered for his positive outlook on life, keen wit and generosity of spirit.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Virginia Maxwell Manning Moses; nieces, Virginia Manning Moses and Marjorie Moses Schwab; and nephew, John Wills Moses Jr. and his wife Heather; as well as six great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew.
A memorial service was held at the All Faiths Chapel of the Vermont Veterans Home on October 18, 2011 conducted by Kenneth H. Coonradt. Mr. Moses was laid to rest with military honors on October 19, 2011, at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, VT.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street in Bennington, VT 05201.
