Jesse Lecel Cooksey

SPARTANBURG, SC-- Jesse Lecel 'Jess' Cooksey, 83, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born May 23, 1932, in Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Isaac Lecel Cooksey and Corrine Goldsmith Cooksey.
A U. S. Army and SC National Guard veteran, Mr. Cooksey was a retired executive with Cooksey-Reynolds Insurance Agency and a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Wofford College where he played basketball and still holds the record for the most fumble recoveries in a single football game.
An honored recipient of the North Carolina Order of the Longleaf Pine and South Carolina Order of the Palmetto, Mr. Cooksey was a former Board member of the Piedmont Interstate Fair. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Paul Morris Sunday School Class, former church treasurer, and former President of the TUMS Club for 20 years. He was also a former member of the Breakfast Optimist Club and then became a Rotarian, former State Republican Chairman, as well as a two-term member of the Spartanburg City Council.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Jean Eastep Cooksey; children, Edwin L. Cooksey of Spartanburg, SC, Ann C. Rambow (Robert) of Lilburn, GA, Jesse D. Cooksey (Ashley Correll) of Spartanburg, SC, and Julia M. Shown (Kevin) of Lake City, SC; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Trinity United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Neal Y. Woods and the Rev. A. Mickey Fisher. Burial, with military honors, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary escort will be members of the Paul Morris Sunday School Class.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood St., Spartanburg, SC 29302; or Wofford College Athletic Dept., 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.

I worked for Jesse since around 1980 and still do in a small way. He was a very kind man was always willing to help anyone out who needed it. I will miss him and it has been a privilege to know him.
