John Gray Obituary

John Riley Gray

SPARTANBURG, SC-- John Riley Gray, 83, formerly of 444 Keltner Avenue, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at White Oak Estates. Born March 10, 1927, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Charles Alexander and Alma Horn Gray. He was first married to the late Margie Faust Gray and then to the late Ethel Deming Gray. He was retired from Spartan Automotive with over 50 years of service and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific. He was a member of Croft Baptist Church, Ten Speed Bicycle Club, Shrine Club, and V.F.W. Post #9539 of Spartanburg. Mr. Gray was an avid golfer, Atlanta Braves fan, and well known in the race car community. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Gray Fowler and husband Jesse, and Mary John "Johnnie" McClain and husband Jim, all of Spartanburg; two step-sons, Michael Deming and Charlie Deming; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military rites by the SC State Guard Honors Team will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Randy Travis. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or to Hospice Care of SC, 110 Dillon Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
The family is at the homes of his daughters.
