Mary McCutchen Obituary

Mary Hipp Willson McCutchen
SPARTANBURG, SC-- Mary Hipp Willson McCutchen, 96, of Spartanburg, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 7, 2012, at White Oak Estates. Born July 23, 1915, she was the only child of Dr. Jesse O'Neil Willson of Reidville and Edna Gertrude Hipp Willson of Newberry, SC.
A devoted wife and mother, Mary Hipp grew up in Spartanburg. She graduated from Converse College in 1937 with a degree in piano performance. She moved to Bishopville where she married James Edmund McCutchen III. She taught in Bishopville and at Thomas Sumter Academy in Sumter County. In Spartanburg, Mary Hipp was an active communicant at The Episcopal Church of the Advent. She was active in The National Society of the Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Thursday Study Club, and other literary and social organizations. She loved her church, her family, her music, her friends, and is loved for her wisdom, humor, charm, and irrepressible joy of living.
Surviving are children, James Edmund McCutchen, IV and wife Mabeth Williams McCutchen of Greenville, SC, Dr. Aila Jesse McCutchen of Newton, MA, and Jess Willson McCutchen of Forest Hills, CA; step-grandson, Stephen Heath Lynn and wife Lauren Bates Lynn and step-great-grandson, William Miller Lynn of Atlanta, GA.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be conducted at 1:30 PM Saturday, May 12, 2012, at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, by the Rev. J. Edward Morris. A reception will follow at the church Family Life Center. Private burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
