Ralph Winn Obituary

Ralph Marshall Winn Jr.

SPARTANBURG, SC-- Ralph Marshall Winn Jr. died November 16, 2016, two months short of his 97th birthday.
Born in Plum Branch, South Carolina, he was the last survivor of seven children of Ralph Marshall Winn Sr. and Leila Cheatham Winn and was the widower of Hazel Isehower Winn. He retired in 1985 from a railroad career that began as a telegraph operator at $50 per month and was interrupted only by service in the U.S. Army in the Second World War, a B.S. degree earned at the University of South Carolina on the GI Bill, and a recall to Army service in Korea during that war.
His many friends remember him for his unfailing cheerfulness, patience, and inability to see anything but the best in anyone he knew, as well as his post-retirement tennis and years of volunteer work for Mobile Meals and the Alzheimer's Association, the latter made particularly meaningful in light of his 12+ years of full-time caring for Hazel before her death in 2002.
He is survived by his son Marshall and daughter-in-law Jeannette of Greenville, son Stephen of Sumter, grandson Richard Winn and his wife Bonnie and great-granddaughter Hazel of Oberursel, Germany, granddaughter Eleanor Winn and her fiancé Alex Nordholm of Brooklyn, New York, and special friend for the last several years of his life, Faye Foster Brown of Spartanburg.
A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 21, at Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, with the family receiving friends in the sanctuary immediately following the service.
Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, 419 E. Main St., Spartanburg 29302, or Alzheimer's Association, 901 S. Pine St., Spartanburg 29302.

Dear Mr. Winn's family, I am so sorry for your loss. I met Ralph and Hazel at Spartanburg's Senior Citizen's social day care where my father, Curtis Cooper also attended. As Hazel and Daddy's conditions progressed they both left the center. While Hazel had a private sitter in her home I took Daddy to a medical day care. Unfortunately I lost track of the Winns. Months later Daddy had to be placed in National Health Care. Even months later I saw a new resident and her husband entering NHC. It was Hazel and Ralph! Who would have ever guessed our paths would ever cross again in Mauldin, so far from Spartanburg. My mother, Evelyn and I became friends with Ralph. She and I admired the way Ralph devotedly visited Hazel. It meant a lot that he would always shake Daddy's hand as long as Daddy was able. Ralph was a fine man. Unfortunately After Hazel passed away, I only saw him a few times at Blue Bay Restaurant. Then I never saw him again. After Daddy passed away in 2006, Mother started to need more help. Two days ago when Mother and I were on a RARE trip together to Spartanburg, when on the spur of the moment we decided to look up Ralph. After I tracked him to his last residence, I was told he no longer lived there and I couldn't be told any other information. I feared the worse. Yesterday I discovered his obituary. I regret waiting so long to visit him. Mother and I send our condolences. God bless your whole family, Deborah Burch
