Andrew SCHENK Obituary

June 16, 1969 - March 14, 2024

Spokane - Andrew Erik Schenk, 54, went to be with his savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Andy was one of the friendliest people you'd ever meet. He loved to visit and knew so many people. It was rare that he would go anywhere where he knew nobody...but he didn't really let that stop him from getting in a good visit anyway. His "love language" was quality time with people and it showed. Andy also loved serving in his community and for the benefit of kids. He was a youth baseball and football coach, served on various school committees, was active in booster clubs, and served as a school board member for the Liberty School District. Andy was hardworking, generous, and helpful. He was a devoted and loving husband and father. He was so proud of his boys. He was supportive of Kiley in her business endeavors as well as being her faithful companion in all the various things she volunteered them to do through the years.

Andy was born and raised in Puyallup, Washington, graduating from Puyallup High School. After graduation, he attended Green River Community College and then transferred to Washington State University where he earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1992. Andy's entire career was about roads. His wife and kids knew more about things like signal timing and chip seals than any family member should. Upon graduation from WSU, Andy began work with the Eastern Region of Washington State Department of Transportation. At the DOT, he worked in design, construction, and traffic design. In 2003, Andy took a position with the City of Spokane in traffic design, later moving to traffic operations and then maintenance and operations management. Five years ago, Andy decided to round out his eastern Washington road career with Spokane County serving as the Road Maintenance Manager. He and Kiley were beginning to talk about putting roads in the rearview mirror. Andy's first project at the DOT was the environmental impact study for the North Spokane Freeway. So, if you're wondering how long a project like that takes to complete, it's clearly longer than one man's 30+ year career.

Andy was an active member of Spangle Community Church for many years while his family lived in the Spangle area where he and Kiley raised their boys. Recently as "empty nesters" he and Kiley had settled into Valley Real Life Riverside as their new church home.

Over the years when Andy wasn't working or volunteering, he enjoyed camping, attending WSU football games, working around his place, listening to "books on tape" on Audible, meeting people for coffee, attending ball games, and cheering for the Liberty Lancers mostly, but also for the Reardan Screamin' Eagles. He talked about how when he retired, he was going to be one of those "old guys" meeting up at the local coffee shops. He was looking forward to all the visiting that was to come.

Andy is survived by his wife, Kiley; sons, Tyson and Tanner; parents, Leon and Janet Schenk; siblings, Stephanie Schenk, Connie (Stacey) Ota, and Dan (Apryl) Schenk; father-in-law, Tom Hennigh; mother-in-law, Daphne Hennigh; sister-in-law, Mandy Flaa; brother-in-law, Justin Flaa; nephews, Michael (Preston) Ota, Zachary Ota, Edgar Schenk, Hunter, and Nathan Flaa; and nieces, Ashlynn Ota, Miley and Leilani Schenk, Allyson, Makena and Makensey Schenk, and Emma Flaa; longtime friend, Adrian Ota; aunts, uncles, many cousins, and his "German kids", Sonja (Lars) Wostefeld, Sophia (Ulrik) Volsing, Daniel, Darius, and Darwin Rahim. His friends list would be extensive. He was loved and will be missed by many.

A celebration of Andy's life will be held on Friday, April 12th at 2 PM at Valley Real Life Riverside Campus at 7111 North Nine Mile Road in Spokane, Washington.

Memorial donations can be made to a scholarship that has been established in his name. Send gifts to Liberty Community Education Foundation, PO Box 82, Spangle, WA 99031. Please note "Andy Schenk Memorial Scholarship".

Andy and I spoke frequently during my term as a Union president. We would participate in a monthly coffee meeting to discuss current issues. Though these discussions would occasionally become contentious, they would often diverge into discussions of family and the progress of his wife and sons. Andy would always treat me with respect and was always willing to listen to my point of view. I will miss our discussions. I offer my condolences to his family for your untimely loss. Sincerely, Brent Lewis

I worked with and for Andy in my position at Spokane County. He was always kind to me and took the time to say Hello and ask how I was doing. He emphasized that he had an open-door policy and encouraged us to let him know if we wanted or needed to talk about anything. (Good or Bad). He spoke of his wife and boys often and his love and pride in his family was evident in conversations with him. My condolences go to his family and prayers that they find peace and comfort in treasured memories of their life and adventures together.

Kiley, my sweetheart girlfriend. I love youn, Andy, Tyson and Tanner so very much. You and I were quick best friends at WSU. I felt so blessed to have you by my teenage side. I remember when you first shared about meeting this amazing man Andy. I knew it was right! Your exchange of vows was so beautiful and I've always been so honored to witness dedication of love as you did for me girl! Vince and I cherish the times we spent together. Andy is a gracious and twinkle in his eye kinda man and amazing father to your beautiful sons. I love you all and praying daily for your peace and the boys peace. Andy is in paradise now. Andy and I were hired by WSDOT Spokane in 1992. He was SO nice. I remember he had a pick-up and a golden lab, or two. He helped me move, once. He felt like family. I knew Andy as selflessly kind.
People move on. Change careers. But 15 years later, I remember mentioning how nice Andy was, while working in a Kelso field office. I was lucky to know him. Shocked to know that he died. I feel really bad for his family.

Andy and I worked together on a number of projects at the City of Spokane. I found him to be very knowledgeable, a great collaborator, and a pleasure work with. At his essence, Andy was an excellent human being, and the planet will be a lesser place without him.

I am so sad to hear of Andy's passing. He and I were friends at WSU, and we had a lot of adventures together. Playing raquetball with Andy at WSU especially comes to mind. He would drop and hard shot low in the corner and it would dribble away from the wall. He would turn to me and condescendingly say. "Three P's Dave - Power...Precision...Placement" pausing between each word and bending a finger over for each one he listed. A grin would follow (the same grin shown in the picture above). Some things never change. Even though we didn't see each other much after WSU, I definitely enjoyed the times we did get together. Just like old times. He will be sorely missed.

Leader, mentor and friend. Quick witted, funny and caring. Family man, always talking about Kiley and the boys. Andy's energy was endless for a cause. I was lucky to have been able to spend a few years around his energy. Thank you Andy.

I remember being with Janet and Leon the night she went into labor with Andy. We were discussing names and I tried to get her to change the middle name, but I lost out to Eric. I did win the best prize as we got to share a birthday for years. You are going to be missed this June and always. Marla Forness

Andy´s oldest son, and my youngest played their first year of youth football together, and we coached together along with Jeff Fix and we had an absolute blast. Our team had a great time.

I had the privilege of going to WSU with Andy and his wife Kiley. We were both engineers. The first thing I remember about Andy was his laugh. It was infectious. I will always remember his laugh and smile.
