Barry SMITH Obituary

Barry Malcolm Smith, 86, of Spokane, WA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, January 8, 2023, after succumbing to complications from Parkinson's disease. Barry was born on October 5, 1936, to John and Luella Smith in Charles Town, WV. He was the 5th of 6 sons. After graduating from Shepherd College in 1958 he entered West Virginia University to study medicine. In 1962, Barry met the love of his life Judy, a nurse, at WVU Medical Center. On June 4, 1963, the day after Barry graduated from medical school, he and Judy married in Wheeling, WV. He then served two years in the Air Force, stationed in Enid, OK. In the following years, they were blessed with 3 beautiful children. The family settled in Spokane in 1970 where Barry practiced at several facilities including Eastern State Hospital, his own private practice, and Lakeland Village before teaching pharmacology at Spokane Community College. Always progressive and open-minded, Barry, from the beginning, treated everyone equally even during a time when it was widely unaccepted. Outside of being a physician, Barry was a true Renaissance man. His passions included all things artistic - painting, drawing, and writing - he was an avid reader, loved film, sports, history, and traveling the world with Judy. A man always in pursuit of adventures and challenges, Barry sailed the Caribbean, ran 50 miles on his 50th birthday, and was one of the first to climb Mt. St. Helens after its eruption. His retirement years were filled with the joy of spending time with his two beautiful granddaughters. Barry will be remembered for his wit, kind heart, and love of life. He was a significant presence in the lives of people he touched, whether co-workers, patients, neighbors or family, or even exchange students. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with anyone who would show enthusiasm. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. We will miss his cartoon place settings at the dinner table, his collection of newspaper clippings under his seat cushion, knowing every Jeopardy! answer his enormous sweet tooth, and his unwavering love for Judy. Thank you Barry for your calm, even presence in all of our lives. Barry was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers John, Bill, and Donald. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Judy, his children Anne (Jerry), Andrew (Jenny), and Alicia, his granddaughters Taylor (Morgan) and Talia; his brothers Archie (since deceased) and Todd; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral Services will be at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 3327 S. Perry, Spokane, WA on Friday, January 27, 2023, at 11 am. He will be inurned at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Spokane. The online memorial page can be found at www.holycrossofspokane.org. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barry's memory may be made to Northwest Parkinson's Foundation

Barry was an exceptional human being in every sense of the word. Smart, Funny, Kind, and Talented are the words that come to mind. An excellent doctor, artist, recanteur, husband, father, Big Brother and friend. A fully developed adult with both reason and compassion/empathy. Remembering him will always put a smile on my face.

Dr Smith provided excellent care to the people living at Lakeland Village. He also provided continuous education to all the staff members on topics ranging from medical to art to travel to literature. He was a truly good man.
