Calvin Edwards Obituary

EDWARDS, Calvin Lyle (Age 71) Born September 23, 1938 in Republic, WA to Ike and Wilma Edwards. Cal passed away September 13, 2010 from a tragic accident on September 11, while doing one of the things he loved most in the world, riding horses and working cattle. We will be forever grateful to his riding partners that day, Sonni Gilbert, Stan Stritzke, Bobbi and Dave Eatmon. Due to their heroic efforts we were blessed with two extra days to tell Cal how much he was loved and cherished by his family and friends. Cal was the consummate entrepreneur and fierce competitor. A true craftsman he launched Cal's Drywall out of his garage in the late 60's. Then together with his wife Evonne, they established and grew the tremendously successful LAC Drywall & Stucco in 1974 and later owned and operated Northern Supply and Tri State Walls & Ceilings. Never one to sit still or rest on his past achievements, even after "retiring" Cal became a developer, continuing to happily work 10 hour days until his death. Cal had a giant spirit and enriched the lives of everyone he encountered, but none more so than his beloved family, who were the center of his life. Cal adored and was happily married for 32 years to the love of his life, Evonne. His other closest surviving family include son Calvin, daughters Becky Hubble, Lisa Williams, Karla Hatcher, Cindy Conner, and Ginny Dickman, stepsons Randy, Tracy, and Danny Peterson. Constantly next to his heart and one of his greatest joys were all of his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who he took great joy in teasing unmercifully! Second only to his family, Cal's passion was his horses (and mules!). Always a true cowboy he grew up riding horses. He took up the sport of team penning in the early 80's, then moved on to team sorting. Like in business, he proved himself the ultimate competitor, winning scores of buckles, blankets, saddles, and much more over the years. He will be most remembered by those who he took under his wing, providing selfless coaching, encouragement and wisdom to anyone who wanted to learn about horsemanship and the sport. Cal fulfilled his dream by building Mt. View Arena, where he held pennings and sortings for everyone to enjoy. With Evonne by his side, Cal spent most summers at Pend Oreille River with family and friends swimming, boating, riding his bike and playing tennis. Life at the river will never be the same without Cal's special scrambled eggs! Most of all Cal was a loving husband, father, and friend, happily doing things for someone else, friend or stranger, never expecting anything in return. He was called home far too soon, and he will be greatly missed. Cal was preceded in death by his parents and sister Patsy Edwards. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Cal Edwards to Hospice of Spokane, 121 S. Arthur, Spokane, WA 99201. Cal's life will be celebrated at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 9706 N. Division St. on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Please sign Cal's online guestbook at www.hennesseyfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to:

I met my uncle Cal and Evonne at our family reunion in 1980. I worked for Cal for a while in 1980. It is hard to believe Cal is gone. He was bigger than life. I was always proud to tell people about my uncle from Spokane in the drywall business. We spent a couple days together at christmas a few years ago. I am happy to have those memories. My sympathy to Evonne and his family.

Dear Evonne,
Our deepest sympahty goes out to you and your entire family.
Cal was a dear man and a real friend.
When Cal and I would pen together, him being the "Pro" and me the "Novice" he would always encourage me even when I would mess up (sometimes a little gruff but with a twinkle in his eye and a warm heart). One of the nicest things Cal did for me was when he sold me 'Skipper'. He said he was the perfect horse for me and he was right.
With much Love and respect,
Carol and Dick Baycroft

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Cal's family, friends, fellow sorters and penners. Cal, we enjoyed sorting with and against you over the years. We had great times in Spokane and St. Regis and will miss you greatly. If Jesus hasn't learned how to ride and sort yet, I'm sure he will soon with your help. God Bless...

The right words are hard to find when a special person has to say good-bye to his friends and family. Let the many wonderful memories of Cal help heal the pain in your heart. One of our fondest memories is of a New Years Eve riding bareback in the snow at midnight.
Take special care, Evonne -- Bob & Kathie Neu

HIS JOURNEY'S JUST BEGUN
Let me tell you folks
who have gathered here today
that I'm a proud and thankful cowboy
who has just passed away.
I know it's hard
but please don't cry
for I'm now riding God's trails
high up in the sky.
Don't think of me as gone away
my journey's just begun
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
I have lived a good life
a cowboys dream come true.
Thank you Lord
for now I'm ready to ride
into eternity me, my horse and you.
In loving memory of Uncle Cal
