Charles HAFNER Obituary

January 25, 1932-July 18, 2021

Chuck started his career in education teaching a class of 55 fifth grade students. While teaching full time and working part-time jobs to support his family, Chuck earned his Master's Degree from EWSC, along with Administrative and Superintendent Credentials. He went on to work as an administrator at Otis Orchards Upper Elementary (East Valley), Mead Junior High and High Schools and Principal at both Central Valley and University High Schools (Central Valley School District). He ended his career in education as Assistant Superintendent of The Central Valley School District. Chuck had a bottomless well of stories about and lessons learned from the students and staff under his charge.

Chuck spent a short time working in the business world for Appleway Leasing and People to People, but found his way back to Education.

In later years, Chuck took pride serving as a Council Member for the City of Spokane Valley, and serving on the boards of the Spokane Regional Transportation Council, S.C.O.P.E., the Spokane Regional Health District and others. Chuck felt that in order to make a positive difference, one must be involved. He became a valued advisor to those seeking political office.

Chuck was a long time member of the Spokane Yacht Club and involved with the Spokane Boat Show for many years. He and Janet enjoyed many adventures with friends and family on the water. Chuck was an avid golfer and he loved to fish and travel in his RV. Chuck could be found cheering on his grandchildren's activities both indoors and out.

He was a sports coach, but most importantly, a life coach. Chuck was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Chuck's contributions to his family, friends and the community are far reaching and will leave a lasting legacy. Charles is survived by Janet, his wife of 68 years, his daughters Suzanne (Steve) and Julie, grandchildren - Matthew, Karynn, Jason and Kori, and one great-grandchild.

There will be a Celebration of Chuck's life at Center Place, August 22, 2021, from 1:00-2:30. Please be prepared to follow current CDC suggestions so that we may gather safely. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice of Spokane or an organization that assists young people in need.

Chuck was a huge influence in my life. He was my mentor, as well as my principal at both Uhi & Mead. More than that he was a good friend to my family. He always acted happy to see us.

Chuck was my principal at the old Otis Orchards Junior High. He was an amazing teacher, coach, and administrator. He always remembered me and was quick to relate my boyhood antics in detail. What an amazing person. Let me also say if you ever were on the receiving end of one of Chuck's hacks you never came back for a second one. The Spokane Valley just lost a legend.
