Curtis SANDS Obituary

Curt Sands, 78, passed away from complications of renal failure and heart disease. He passed peacefully with family by his side in the early afternoon of January 2, 2023, in Portland, Oregon.

Curt leaves behind his three sons: Brad, Shawn & Tyson. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Maija, Zane, Alyssa, Wyatt, Lexi, Kate, Brynn & Cason.

Curt has one sibling in his sister, Illa Sheldon.

Curt was born in Spokane, Washington. He grew up on a horse ranch in the valley with his parents Carl and Ina, and sister Illa.

Curt graduated from West Valley High School in 1962 where he participated in track and football. He attended Washington State University and received his bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant management. He moved on to a successful career in the recruiting industry where he had his own business for many years.

Curt had a passion for staying active and fit. He also loved the outdoors and spending time hiking or riding his bike. He loved watching his grandkids participate in sports and made it a priority to attend as many of their events as he could.

Curt always took the time to reach out to friends and family to see how they were doing. He maintained a close friendship with his ex-wife Susan Sands. His friends and family were always a priority.

We'll look back fondly and smile thinking about all the good memories and the time we got to spend with him. He was easy to talk to and easy to be around. As one of his close friends put it, "he was a good old soul."

He was a good friend, loving father, and grandfather. He had a heart of gold and a kind disposition.

Dad…you will be missed. Skål!

I first knew Curt in 9th grade algebra class & "frosh" football at West Valley, then Wazzu, then we both wound up in Portland. Curt was the ideal friend: dependable and true (always 15 minutes early). Over the decades Curt kept me abreast about his boys & grandkids and we shared sports news endlessly (Wazzu & NFL football, Trailblazers, etc.)
Curt was always determined to focus on the positive and shun the downer stuff in conversation. His courage & patience through all the years of dealing with his liver condition were inspiring.
I miss my friend Curt so much! GO COUGS!!
