Derick SYHLMAN Obituary
Spokane - Our gentle, loving, empathetic son, Derick John Syhlman was set free October 14, 2025. He was taken away too soon by the deadly disease of addiction. But the disease did not define him-Derick was a scholar, artist, baker, world traveler, best friend, animal lover and family man. Derick was born on May 23, 1991, in Spokane, WA. He attended Assumption Parish School and Gonzaga Prep, graduated from EWU and just received his master's degree in Phytobacteriology from University of Hawaii. He was on the path toward his dream career-helping to protect the environment. To know Derick was to understand the definition of a true friend! He had a gift for making others feel valued and loved. He is survived by his parents Patty and Brian, sisters Marisa (Teague), and Claire, his niece Elora, and his loving extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and close friends. We will forever miss you Derick and never forget you! A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Montvale Event Center, 1019 W. Riverside Ave., Spokane, WA 99201. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local Humane Society in Derick's memory.

Though I didn´t have the honor of knowing Derick personally, I feel like I know a part of his story through the lens of those of us who have witnessed or walked alongside the disease of addiction. The pain of losing such a bright, kind soul is felt deeply - even by strangers.
Please know that my heart is with your family. The way you described Derick - as a scholar, artist, and friend who made others feel loved - shows that his spirit was one of pure goodness. Addiction may have touched his life, but it never defined who he truly was. Wishing you peace and gentle comfort as you celebrate his beautiful life.

Derick was kind and funny, the kind of person who could make you laugh even on the hardest days. I´ll always remember him in the sunlight of the Spirit, where his light still shines Grateful for the time we shared and sending love to his family and everyone who loved him.

Hands down Derick is the reason I´m sober today. He was there for me when I first got sober and helped me by listening and sharing with me on our many car rides to and from sober functions. He came with me to a wedding as my sober date so I wouldn´t have to face it alone. He was so kind and loving and a true kindred spirit. His words and actions I carry with me 15 years later. I´m so grateful that my life was graced with his presence. I pray he has found peace with God in heaven. He helped so many people and he will be missed.

There are no words that can ease this kind of heartbreak, but I want you to know I´m holding you close in my thoughts and prayers. Derick´s memory will always live on in the love he had for his family and friends.
I know I have some great photos of Derick. I will find them and post so we can be reminded of his funny and good natured disposition.

Derick was always FaceTiming to show me the sunsets or flowers or sending photos. Now I picture him helping God to paint the sunsets and sunrises.
