Donna SMITH Obituary

Donna Mae Smith, born October 29, 1938, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to John and Rose Kessel, passed away on September 27, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. Her passing holds special meaning, as it fell on the wedding anniversary of her beloved parents, whom she cherished deeply. On that day, she was lovingly welcomed home to join them in their heavenly celebration.

Donna lived a life filled with joy, laughter, faith, and devotion to those she loved. She shared 69 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Herbert "Bill" Smith, and together they built a legacy of love that will carry on through their family.

A woman of strong Catholic faith, Donna lived her values daily through kindness, service, and care for others. She was known for her warmth and generosity, touching countless lives during her years as a lunch lady at Regal Elementary. Generations of children fondly remembered her famous holiday sugar cookies, which brought smiles to young faces year after year.

She had a spirit of adventure and fun, whether camping under the stars, baking something sweet, or enjoying a trip to the casino. Donna especially loved the holidays, creating magical experiences for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Donna is survived by the love of her life, Bill; daughters Debbie Wehrli and Vicki (Ed) Fischer; grandson Neil (Shaunda) Smith; granddaughter Jenifer (Brian) Piper; and great-grandchildren Abigale and Tanner Piper. She is also survived by many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Lee Wehrli; and her brother, Ron Kessel.

She will be deeply missed, but her memory and faith will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

A Rosary will be held at Hennessey Funeral Home and Crematory, Thursday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m. A celebration of Donna's life will be held at Mary Queen Parish on Friday, October 3, at 10:00 a.m., with burial and a reception to follow.
