Elisa Griffith Obituary

GRIFFITH, Elisa "Ely" (Villanueva) Elisa Villanueva Griffith died unexpectedly Monday after heart surgery. She was born in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, Philippines on July 10, 1937. She had degrees from the Universi- ties of the Philippines, Tennessee and Hawaii. She studied for a PhD in Education at the U of Montana. She was an extension agent at UP-Los Banos, a professor at Mindanao State U, an educational consultant and a homemaker. In 1972, she married Douglas Griffith. They lived in Missoula, MT, until 1981, when she and her husband moved to Saudi Arabia. They lived there for eight years, and annually traveled around the world, visiting both Asian and European countries. They have been at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute in Spokane for the past 20 years and have hosted many Japanese students here. She could often be found in her garden or in her kitchen making a cake, a batch of jam or a special dish for dinner. She tatted, crocheted and sewed. She had many collections especially of dishes, tablecloths and Japanese dolls. She was married to Doug for 35 years. He survives her as do her sisters Isabel Villanueva, Victoria Silva and Evelina Batislaong, her brother Carlos Villanueva, Avis and Toby Stapleton, Lynn and GK Griffith, and Gordon and Nic Griffith, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins in the US and the Philippines, and innumerable friends around the world. She touched everyone that she met. A celebration of her life will be held at the Commons, MFWI at 2 pm, Friday, December 18.

I remember Ely as so incredible kind to MFWI staff and students - always wiolling to comfort a sick or homesick student, always willing to be a "homestay" parent, always willing to host a visiting professor. My heartfelt condolescences to Doug and her family.

My Dad, my bf Mat, and I drove from Seattle to Spokane for Lola's surgery. I was there so I could be her primary nurse and to see to it that she's well taken cared of. I got Lola Etang to watch Harry Potter's Half Blood Prince after dinner, the night of surgery. I found her unopened DVD on the shelf and asked her if she wants us to play it because I know it's her favorite (she read all JKRowling's series). I decided it'd be a good bonding time even if I'd already watched it. Lola slept early but Mat and I finished the movie.

December 14, 2009

We got up at 4am and drove to the hospital. Lola was very brave and was just looking forward to getting it done. I never saw a fear in her eyes. She was very proud telling all the nurses in the hospital that I'm her grandchild and I work in the ER at UW. Around 1pm Mat and I headed to the cafeteria to grab some coffee. Familiar with hospital codes at work, hearing a Code Blue followed by her doctor's name a few minutes after they said everything went well made my heart beat insanely. "I hope it wasn't Lola. Lord, please.Maybe it was a different doctor," I told Mat. We went back to the waiting room and the phone rang, I picked up and a guy was looking for Lolo Doug. I asked if it had something to do with the code and the guys said yes. I gave the phone to Lolo and I started crying.

I will really miss her. Since I moved here in the US from the Philippines four years ago and started earning on my own, she's the only person who gives me something because people know that I am usually the one who provides. To know that somebody at least someone out there is giving me something back (not that I can't get it for myself).....

I will really miss you Lola. The treasured gifts (from your first winter jacket that you handed down to me, a bracelet that you gave me for my bday, and your teaching by example on spending wisely and saving for the future) I will cherish them all. I will miss calling you to vent out my feelings when nobody in Seattle understands me. Did I mention that I also share to her stories about the boys? She always tells me to be self-sufficient and to not let anyone hinder me from achieving my goals, if it's to continue my education or pursuing another career.

Lola, wherever you are, I know you're happy and at peace. Watch over us especially Lolo Doug. We love you and you will always be remembered in our hearts.
