Hope Boos Obituary

CAPRYE BOOS, Hope T. (Age 79) Hope Caprye Boos passed away April 27, 2010 in Spokane. She was born March 31, 1931 in Rapid City, SD the daughter of Donald and Marietta (Van Loan) Liggett. Hope moved around the country as her Dad found depression era jobs at such places as the Fort Peck Dam in Montana, Bremerton shipyards in Washington, and settling in Richland, Washington. In 1948 Hope was accepted at Gonzaga University as one of the first Co-ed undergraduates. She married Mike Caprye in February of 1952. She graduated that spring as the first woman with a Bachelor of Science from GU. While enrolled at GU she attended Sacred Heart School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse. Hope pioneered Montessori early childhood education in Spokane opening the first Montessori preschool at Fort Wright College in the early 1960's. Her love of Montessori and children inspired her to operate Montessori preschools for over three decades. She participated in national Montessori training and education associations and started her own Montessori teacher certification program. In December of 1979 she married Chuck Boos. Her love of learning led her to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Portland and certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in August of 1982. She instructed at the Inter-collegiate Center for Nursing Education at Fort Wright from 1982 to 1991. Hope was a member of St. Francis of Assisi parish for 55 years participating in many activities and ministries. She loved to play Bridge, dance, and attend the symphony and the theater. She traveled to 15 countries with Chuck and loved experiencing foreign cultures and visiting historic sites. Hope would often bring back cultural souvenirs to share with her Montessori students. Hope's faith, strength and leadership helped form her children's lives and the lives of thousands of students. She would often say, "Be a leader not a follower." Hope is survived by her loving husband of 30 years Chuck Boos of Spokane; children Michele (Hal) Small of Lake Stevens, WA, Michael (Peggy) Caprye of Spokane, Monica (Tim) Smith of Seattle, WA and Mark Caprye of Spokane; sister Loretta Levno of Spokane; brother Terry (Betty) Liggett of Great Falls, MT; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Vigil services will be Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 5pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, May 3, 2010 at 11am and will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 4420 N. Jefferson, Spokane. Committal will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Francis Assisi Parish or The Poor Clare Sisters.
