Jack WHIPPLE Obituary

November 21, 1941 - September 14, 2025

Spokane - Jack Wayne Whipple, born November 21, 1941, in Seattle, WA, to Lorman A. and Alice "Pat" (Charles) Whipple, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. He was 83 years old.

Raised in Spokane, Jack attended Rogers High School, where he met his first love, Melva Watson. Their high school marriage was short-lived, and in January 1964, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army. He completed basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he worked in the motor pool and remained stationed for the duration of his service.

While still in the Army, Jack married Ellen Morien. After his honorable discharge in 1967, the couple returned to Spokane, where Jack worked delivering propane before being hired at Discount Muffler, later transitioning to Midas Muffler. Jack and Ellen divorced in 1975.

In 1976, Jack married Karin (Larson) Barbee, and together they moved to Lewiston, Idaho, where they opened a Midas Muffler shop.

Jack's love of automobiles and racing defined much of his life. That passion was sparked early on, spending time with his uncle at the Mead racetrack. In 1985, he bought his first mini sprint race car and was honored with the People's Choice Award that same year. He became a familiar face at Deming Speedway, where he spent many weekends surrounded by friends and family.

Following his divorce from Karin in 2000, Jack retired from the muffler business and relocated to La Conner, Washington. There, he enjoyed his role as a security guard for Tesoro Corporation.

Alongside his love of NASCAR, Jack took great pride in collecting eagles and Elvis Presley memorabilia - both of which featured prominently in his home and workspace. He was always eager to share stories, especially from his racing days, and he never ran out of opinions to offer.

Jack is survived by his brothers, Pat (Joann) and Ken; his sons, Jack (Renee) and Chris (Stacy); his stepdaughter, Patricia (Bryan); 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Mike; his daughter, Debbie; and his stepsons, Rich and John.

Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew him for his stubborn charm, unshakable opinions, and the unmistakable spark he brought to every room.

A military service will be held on October 24, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake. A Celebration of Life will follow on October 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at VFW Post 51, located at 300 W. Mission Avenue in Spokane. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring Jack's life.

Grandpa thought he was funny. Sometimes he was but most of it I didn´t understand. Some story´s are as embarrassing as the nicknames he gives people. But no matter what he would say or how weird the jokes are or out of line there was always a smile after. The smile that would light up the room and make you forget that his joke wasn´t very funny. He will be missed dearly weird jokes and all.
Love you grandpa.

Jack was my cousin. Our fathers were brothers. I have so many memories of him at our family cabin, when he lived with my parents in Spokane beteen wives, his racing career with his son Chris, and when he rented our mother in law apartment before he moved back to Spokane. He was a charming kind human. He and my husband enjoyed many outings at the Eagles where they listened to karoke. Thank you Pat, Joanne, and Ken for your faithful caring of him when he needed you the most.
