Jean BROWN Obituary
Jean Rae Brown went to Heaven on Monday, October 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Jean was a devoted mom, grandma, and friend whose warmth and joy touched everyone around her. She cherished family, music, crafting, and her church. She has been and will remain an important member of her family.
Jean Rae was the only child of Alfred and Doris Stanley. She was born in Los Angeles, CA, on December 21, 1928. Jean had a strong bond with her mother and grandfather, who taught her early on to work hard and earn her own money. She helped at her mother's boutique and at her grandfather's shoe repair shop. After her parents' divorce, her mother married Vivian "Stig" Stigall. Jean helped at her stepfather's family soda shop as well. She went on to work at Revere Copper and Brass as a switchboard operator.
Jean developed a passion for reading when she was young, which continued throughout her life. As a teenager she loved going to the beach with her friends. Her favorite place to go was Catalina Island. She graduated from Bell High School in 1946 then went on to attend Compton College where she was a member of a sorority.
In 1951, Jean married I.L. Brummett, a police officer with the Los Angeles police department, and together they had four children: Timothy Dennis, Shelley Lynn, Patrick Lee, and Kerry Kathleen. Jean dedicated herself to homemaking and caring for their family. Following her divorce from I.L. in 1962, she married Robert "Bob" Brown in 1964. Later that year, their daughter Robin Jean was born. In 1972, Bob accepted a position at Early Dawn Dairy and the family relocated to Spokane, Washington. Their daughter Denise Emily Ann was born in 1974. Jean and Bob divorced in 1982. Jean maintained amicable relationships with both of her former spouses.
Jean was a top-selling Avon lady for several years while raising her youngest children. She was very crafty and creative and enjoyed being down in her sewing room where she would spend time making darling crafts and "cutesies." In her later years, she discovered a love for scrapbooking. Jean spent countless hours creating a separate series of scrapbooks for all of her children. Those scrapbooks will be treasured forever as they are full of pictures and memories that capture the wonderful lives and traditions she created for her family.
Jean was a respected member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she was active in several groups, one being a humanitarian group, which met up each Friday. Jean enjoyed spending time with "her ladies" while serving others.
Jean's greatest roles were as a devoted mom and grandma. She made sure every holiday and birthday was extra special. She always had her camera ready to capture all the moments. Family was so important to Jean, and as a result, her children and grandchildren will continue gathering with the traditions that distinguish their family.
Jean loved Gonzaga Bulldogs basketball and the Seattle Mariners. Her favorite Mariner was Eugenio Suarez, whom she nick-named "Kissy Face" because she thought he was so "dad-gum cute"! She enjoyed watching all the games and cheering on her boys. Jean surely will continue to root for her teams from Heaven as their very own good luck angel.
Jean lived independently until right after her 95th birthday. Following an injury, she was transferred to Sunshine Health and Rehab for recovery, where she remained until her passing. Jean met many dear friends during her time at Sunshine. She was a rock star at bingo and was always excited to show off the prizes that she'd won. She loved music and singing and would frequently sing to and with her friends and family as they visited.
Jean was preceded in death by her grandparents, father Alfred Stanley, mother Doris Stigall, stepfather Vivian "Stig" Stigall, children Patrick Brummett and Shelley Scheller, great-grandson Jayce Scheller, son-in-law Russell Dial, former spouses I.L. Brummett & Robert Brown, and many friends.
Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Timothy & Jayme Brummett, daughter and fiance Kerry Dial & Sonny Windspirit, daughter and son-in-law Robin & Jeff West, daughter and son-in-law Denise & Kevin Rice, 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, along with so many friends and loved ones.
Jean is surely singing and dancing in Heaven with all the family and friends that arrived there before her. There is no doubt that her mother, grandfather, and children were there to welcome her with the biggest hugs ever as she cradled her great-grandson, Jayce, in her arms. What a celebration it must have been!
The family extends a huge thank you to the staff of Sunshine Health and Rehab for the compassion and care provided to their mom and grandma, Jean, throughout the final 22 months of her life. You are all very much appreciated. Additionally, the family wishes to express special gratitude to Horizon Hospice for the heartfelt support and care of Jean and family during her final days.
A gathering to celebrate Jean's beautiful life will be held at 11:00am, on Saturday, November 8, 2025, in the cultural hall at the LDS Church, located at 5322 N. Evergreen Rd., Spokane Valley, WA 99216.
