Jean Keil Obituary

KEIL, Jean (Blakinger) Jean Blakinger Keil delighted in the joy of helping others and lit up the lives of all who knew her with her beautiful smile and lively spirit. Mrs. Keil was born in Aurora, Illinois, May 6, 1920 to Loretta and Leo Blakinger. She had two brothers, Leo and Richard. Mrs. Keil is survived by her husband, Edwin Lee Keil, and their four children: John, Larry, Nancy and Betsy. She leaves ten grandchildren, three step grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Keil graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1942. There, she met and married fellow student John David Reep who was killed in action in World War II. On July 16, 1945 Jean married Captain Edwin Lee Keil whom she had also known at Millikin University. After the war the Keils lived in Philadelphia, PA. and Decatur, IL and moved to Spokane, WA. in 1950. Jean continued to follow her passion for learning and teaching, engaging in graduate work and earning several awards. She was an extraordinary second grade teacher for many years with a unique skill in helping children with learning disabilities. She eventually became the Special Education Coordinator in the Spokane School District. Her work has been published in newspapers and professional journals. In 2003 the Keils moved to Seattle, WA to be closer to family after Jean was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She never lost her warm, kind spirit, and those who love her were happy to be able to give back some of the care she had so willingly shown to them and others throughout her life. Jean died at home on January 11, 2010 among beloved family members. She will be greatly missed and long admired for her engaging and loving parenting, her devoted and loyal companionship, and for living a life of joy and service. Memorial services for Jean Blakinger Keil will be held at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 4900 NE 50th, on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 1:00pm. Gifts in memory of Jean can be given to the Alzheimer's Association or Providence Hospice of Seattle.

Dear Ed, John, Larry, Nancy and Betsy,
It was with great sadness I learned of Jean's passing. What a wonderful, caring and giving woman she was. I will forever remember her happy smile and that fact that she always thought about the other person first. Her positive attitude was so infectious and I loved being around here. I hope in the days to come your sorrow is replaced with treasured memories. She will be sorely missed, but her beautiful smile and giving heart will live on forever. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Mrs. Keil was one of the best teachers I ever had. She had a knack for getting the best from her students. I was in her class in the early 1960's at the old Bemis school. She will be missed. I would not be as successfull as I am had it not been for her guidance.
