Jonathan STEINHART Obituary

Jonathan Ralph Steinhart (age 74) passed away on August 7, 2021 while hiking near Moscow, ID. Jonathan was born the only child of Ralph and Helen Steinhart on June 12, 1947. Following graduation from the Pingry School of Elizabeth, NJ in 1965, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College. Following college, he completed an MAT at Harvard University, obtained his medical degree from Rutgers University-New Jersey Medical School, and an MPH from the University of Washington.

Trained as both a family physician and obstetrician/gynecologist, he joined the United States Public Health Service in 1980, as a commissioned officer and retired with the rank Captain in 2009. His longest term of duty was in Shiprock, New Mexico where he lived and worked on the Navajo reservation for over twenty years, having served for a time as chief of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After retiring from the USPH, he moved to Spokane where he worked as an urgent care physician, most recently with Concentra.

He married Ashley Shultz, PhD, of Spokane, in Durango Colorado in 2002.

Always active, he set records in track and field for both his high school and college teams. He loved the outdoors and hiked, skied, camped, and biked in the beautiful terrain of the South and Northwest. An Eagle Scout himself, he was an active leader for Troop 22 in Spokane. He enjoyed many outdoor activities with his Eagle Scout sons and other Boy Scouts.

He enjoyed musical activities, particularly singing, and he sang locally with Pages of Harmony, a barbershop chorus, Hubberstan Nonesuch, a madrigal performing group, and the choir of St. John's Cathedral. He was active in Episcopal Church for most of his adult life and he was a member of St. John's Cathedral. He was also a member for the Third Order of the Society of St. Francis, a lay Episcopal Franciscan order with a local fellowship in Spokane.

Both his parents and Dr. Steinhart had a long relationship with a mission community in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Many years ago he and his family developed a supportive relationship with a young Haitian boy, Wilex Roger, who now teaches at the Union School in Port Au Prince.

He is survived by his sons Jordan and Andrew, and cousins Barbara Chester, Jim Steinhart, and Jack Pansegrau.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 11:00 – 1:30 pm at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021 at 4:00 pm at St. John's Cathedral (masks required).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Episcopal Church in Navajoland, P.O. Box 720, Farmington, NM 87499 or Cathedral Music Ministry at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue, Spokane WA 99202.

I am so very sorry to hear this late. Jonathan was a wonderful human being. I met him at God Samaritan Hospital during his residency. He was a very kind and compassionate man. He will be missed. RIP.

I knew Jonathan later in life when he was relaxing at the Lake Coeur D Alene summer camp (Insidsen) where we hiked, contra danced and ate together for several years. Not only did I dance with him, I danced with his whole family and the other 100 contra-dancers over the years due to an occasional shortage or odd number of participants from time to time. Dancing made everyone at the camp a sort of family relation or close friend whether they liked it or not. I remember Jonathon sang a song on stage that I liked and I told him that he had a voice like Roy Orbison, which gave him stitches of laughter. We had good talks reminiscing about boy scouts and how the scouts don't catch and eat rattle snakes and climb down abandoned mine shafts any more like they did in the 1970's. Jonathan was humble, like a priest, and thusly I knew him only as another comrade in the dance of life, and I need all the friends I can get. I'm sad to hear of his passing.

I am so sad to learn, today, of Jonathan's passing. I met him years ago at a dance camp, and he introduced me to Vocal Week, a singing camp in West Virginia. I did not receive a Christmas letter from him and had been worried so I just now searched for him on the Internet. I remember him as forever kind, extremely talented in singing and music, fun to be with, active and fit with very healthy eating habits. I am happy I was able to meet Andrew and Jordan both in Shiprock and in Spokane. I will miss Jonathan a lot even though I have not seen him in several years. Rest in peace you gentle soul.

An Amherst '69 classmate, I greatly enjoyed knowing Jon, and always looked forward to singing with him at reunions. I had hoped to meet him at a barbershop get-together in the NW, since moving to Vancouver, BC). I'll miss him greatly. He was a kind, smart, talented man.

I knew Jon so little yet he took the time to train me this last Spring as I was learning the ropes at Concentra, as a physician and a colleague. There was a kindness and humbleness to his character and I am reassured that he knew our Lord and Savior and hope to know him better, in God's Time, when we both in our Eternal Home.

Marlene and I were deeply enriched by the three years we spent at Shiprock and still cherish the many lifelong friends we made there. Because of this, we are forever grateful that Jonathon was such a persistent recruiter and that he put Shiprock on the map for us. It was around the third year of working with Jonathon that it dawned on me that he had a truly exemplary attribute: he rarely if ever said a negative word about anyone. Though at a different level of importance, it was also remarkable when Jonathon transformed his penmanship from barely legible to strikingly neat! Jonathon was quite well-rounded as demonstrated by his running and hiking, love of singing, breadth of reading, and desire to put his faith into practice. Our condolences for his passing extend to his family and other friends.

We were so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of our Franciscan brother, who lived his Franciscan values daily in his life and work. He is and will be missed by many, not the least of whom would be his sons of whom he was undoubtedly so proud. A life well lived. Prayers go out for his loved ones as they and we grieve his loss. Too soon gone.

We worked together many years ago in Shiprock. I remember a gentle, kind person who cared very much about his colleagues and patients. He had a long distinguished career and delivered so many babies! I was glad he found Ashley and had the twins. He will be greatly missed.

My heart is so sad to hear of Jonathan's passing. I feel fortunate to have worked with him for 6 years in Shiprock sharing a love of caring for the Navajo people as well as for hiking and music. I remember him as a gentleman intellectual and lover of the outdoors with a wry humor. I knew him as a good man who cared for his patients and his friends. I recall being amazed to learn his age when I met him since he was always so fit and active. How proud he must have been of his Eagle Scout sons in the next chapter of his life! Though I hadn't seen Jonathan in some years our time as colleagues, neighbors and friends will live in my heart. My deepest condolences to his family.

I am so sad to hear of Jonathan`s passing, but I´m thankful for the great memories of our time together in Shiprock New Mexico. I was a pediatrician there from 1989 to 1994, and still had a close association with Jonathan. He is a true gentleman and a scholar, and a wonderful friend. I am grateful that I was influenced for good by his example and caring. My love and blessings to your whole family.
