Larry HAYDEN Obituary

- Larry Lee Hayden, 89, of Spokane, WA, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2024. Larry was born of humble beginnings on June 12, 1934, in Fernwood, Idaho, to Alta and Harold Hayden. The eldest of two children, Larry grew up working on the family ranch. After the loss of the ranch to a devastating fire, he took a job alongside his father working in the local lumber mill to help support his family. Larry enjoyed sports growing up and participated in basketball, baseball, boxing, and football during his high school years. He joined the Air Force at the age of 22 and proudly served his country for four years. Before joining the military in the summer of 1956, Larry met a beautiful redhead (whom he affectionately referred to as Red during their 65 years of marriage) on a blind date by the name of, Lois Makinson. Larry and Lois married on August 4, 1958. They lived in Spokane while Larry finished his military service at Geiger Field then settled in Colfax, WA, where they started their family together. With a drive for hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, Larry owned several businesses during his lifetime. He started an automotive parts business by the name of Hayden Automotive in 1960 and transitioned to the chemical industry in 1970 when the family moved to Spokane. In 1973 he took a job at a small surplus hose company consisting of 3 employees by the name of Spokane House of Hose. Within a year, Larry became the owner of Spokane House of Hose and spent the remaining 40 years of his working career growing this into a thriving business providing industrial and hydraulic hose and fittings to the Inland Pacific Northwest. Larry will always be remembered for his strong leadership, generosity, silly humor, and love of his family and working community. He is survived by his loving wife, Lois; and their three children, Donna (Dave) Richards, Karen (Burton) Rau, and Mike (Stacie) Hayden; along with four grandchildren; and one sister, Sharon Hayden. The family is thankful for the compassionate care Larry was given by the Rockwood Health Center over the last year of his life. Donations in Larry's memory can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Charities or the Rockwood Residents Foundation. A private memorial is to be held at a future date.

We have lots of great memories being with your family at your home and on a camping trip in Canada sitting around the fire that he started. It was fun to hear Larry tell stories and his humor. He will be missed but know that someday we will all be together. May God be with you Lois and your family. Don and Elvera

Larry and Lois were married when I was 5 years old and he was a big part of our lives from then on. He seemed to have endless energy and a love of life. From family trips to weekend get togethers he was always happy and fun to be around. I'll never forget him singing "it's a pirate's life for me" at Disneyland.
From water-skiing to snowmobiling we could always count on Larry.
I feel very fortunate to have had him in our family.
