Loyd JASKELA Obituary
JASKELA,
Loyd
Loyd Arne Jaskela, age 71, of Liberty Lake, WA, passed away on June 11, 2018, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Loyd was born April 9, 1947 in Bakersfield, CA, to his loving parents, Arne and Audree Jaskela. Loyd joined the Navy in 1966 and served honorably in Vietnam in 1968 - 1969 as a Seabee. Loyd returned to the states and had a long career as a construction electrician. Loyd and his first wife, Barbara had a son, Andy, born June 11, 1973. Loyd married his second wife, Pamela on November 23, 1985. The couple remained together until Loyd's passing. A proud veteran, Loyd spent most of his adult life attending veterans' support groups. Loyd's brothers include groups of Vietnam Veterans in both Modesto, CA, and in Spokane, WA.
Loyd was a funny and charming man, and a good friend to many everywhere he went. Loyd enjoyed going to the movies and taking trips to Maui with his wife, Pam, (where Loyd would scuba dive while Pam sunbathed on the beach), and having weekly visits over coffee with his fellow Vietnam veterans. For 25 years, Loyd and his best friend and fellow Vietnam vet, Paul, would hop in Paul's Jeep for a three-week excursion, traversing the back country, camping and hunting for rocks and fossils. This annual trip was a highlight in Loyd's life. Loyd's favorite poem states: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away."
Loyd is survived by his mother, Audree LaGrow, his wife, Pamela Sue Jaskela, his son, Andy Loyd Jaskela, his stepson, Todd Rowell and his wife, Penny and their children, Trevor, Brandon, Tyler, and Nathan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carol Jaskela and her children Rachelle, Kevin, and Wade. Loyd is also survived by all of his fellow Vietnam veterans who accompanied him on the path both in-country and in the many years of readjustment after.
A celebration of Loyd's life will be conducted on Thursday, June 28th, at 10am at the Spokane Vet Center, with a pot-luck lunch following the service. All are invited. Address: 13109 E. Mirabeau Parkway, Spokane Valley, WA. 99216. Phone number: 509-444-8387.
"Thank you for your love and for your friendship, Loyd.
We will always carry your memory in our hearts.
And we veterans render you a final salute for your brotherhood
and for your honorable service to our country."
