I provided comments at the time of her passing, and I mentioned her work as a prison chaplain. I failed to mention that the Muslim men were not supposed to have women present at Friday prayers--but Frances was the only chaplain they would consider having present. They broke their rule about having women present so they could have Frances.

Although we were years apart in age, Frances and I were very close. I will miss her more than I can possibly say.
My brother, Danny, had Down Syndrome, and Alan and I were guardians. (Alan was my husband at the time.) We needed standby guardians who could make decisions for Danny if we couldn't be reached. Frances and Terry (Delmar) were our immediate choice. They were the only ones we would have entrusted with decisions about Danny's care--and they were a splendid and compassionate choice.
Frances was also our choice as chaplain for Danny's memorial service.
Frances was also a shoulder par excellence. She was there during the difficult times after Danny's passing in 1999, and she has also been ever-present in the years since. Because she was in Spokane, and I am in Seattle, we kept in touch with cards and phone calls, although I did see her when I made trips to eastern Washington.
I last saw her in September 2022. I made a day trip to visit and found her in the hospital. When she complained about the hospital food, I reminded her that I had come up to take her out to lunch.
A few days later, I checked in by phone, and she was back at the retirement center where she lived--and happy to be back to retirement center cooking.
Her passing in October 2022 was an unpleasant surprise.
One thing I have not touched on is her career as a prison chaplain. She was the chaplain who kept getting called back after retirement. She was also the chaplain that the Muslim inmates chose to have present at their Friday prayers.
I am privileged to have had Frances Harland as my long-time and very close friend.
