Neal GMEINER Obituary

March 15, 1930 - February 15, 2025

Neal Gmeiner, age 94, passed away on February 15, 2025. Neal made a deep and meaningful impact on everyone he knew. Known for his quick wit and sharp mind, he was thoughtful, humble, and loyal. People gravitated towards him because he made us feel valued, always looking for and finding the good in everyone. His ability to make people feel welcomed and known changed the lives of his extended family, students, athletes, and friends. Born March 15, 1930, on his grandparents' farm in Fairfield, WA, Neal liked to joke that he was born in a manger. His father, suffering from PTSD after WWI, was not active in his childhood, inspiring Neal, later in life, to go out of his way to be there for others. This left Neal's mother, Laura, to raise him and his beloved sisters, Jean and Polly. Despite difficult times, she instilled in them her strong faith, relentless work ethic, and gentle strength. Although not physically large, Neal was a feisty and competitive athlete. He would declare with humor that he was All-City in three sports (Fairfield, WA, population 500). Neal earned his teaching degree from Eastern Washington University in 1952 and remained a dedicated Eastern supporter his entire life. Upon graduation, he entered the Army during the Korean War. Much to his surprise his strong test scores created the opportunity for this small-town kid to serve as a Cryptologist for NATO Command in Italy. Upon returning to Spokane, he married Vernie, started a family, and began his career as a teacher. He taught first at Browne Elementary and later at Wilson Elementary. In the early 1970s, he started a youth track club as he saw a need in the community. He championed female athletes well before Title IX, spending summers building a thriving co-ed team where he encouraged thousands of children to compete and reach their full potential. With clipboard in hand, meticulously keeping individual records, he celebrated each athlete's growth and progress. It was important to Neal that every child who wanted to participate had the opportunity. He was known for driving all over town providing kids with rides to practices, meets, and games in his twelve-passenger van. Neal will always be remembered as someone who gave to others in quiet and meaningful ways. In retirement, Neal found joy in his children, grandchildren, friends, his companion Patty, golf, and attending countless sporting events, most importantly Eastern Eagles Football. As his children, we learned the meaning of friendship by watching the joy in his lifelong friendships from childhood, college, and track years. Even in his nineties, he continued to make new friends at the Spokane Veterans Home. Neal lived his life filled with kindness, love, and integrity. Neal leaves behind four children, Larry (Diane), Lynn (Shirley), Lee (Adrianna), and Lonni (Phil); ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and far too many other friends and family to name. The feeling that stays with us is that "Grandpa Donut" saw us and celebrated us enthusiastically. He lived his life in a way that left so many better off for having known him. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, July 13th from 1-4pm at The Lower Manito Park Shelter, a place special to him where he watched his children and grandchildren play.

Mr. Gmeiner was my 6th grade teacher at Browne in 65-66 and 4 years later my brother Sam also had him for 6th grade. We have talked about his effect on us. He challenged us like few teachers ever. My crazy knowledge of latin america is due to him. I can still pronounce volcano names Popocatepetl and iztaccihuatl and chichinautzin! Mt Acancagua in Chile, the Atacama desert which was the source of nitrates for fertilizer before artificial nitrates were introduced. He challenged us to find his mistakes! He pushed us a lot. He was a bundle of energy and looked like he never aged! Thankyou for so much, Mr G. You are part of the reason why Sam became a jr high and high school teacher.

I LOVED Mr. Gmeiner!!! I was one of his Kiwanis Track Club members as a youth in the early to mid 70's before I headed to High School. He was so kind and supportive as a coach. I remember practicing at SCC and traveling to meets all over the state of Washington (what was then AAU meets) and even into Canada. My brothers also ran for Mr. Gmeiner. I know my parents liked him a lot and trusted that he would take good care of us.

I found out about his passing right after I wrote a sympathy card to Max Jensen's wife and wondered about Mr. Gmeiner. My father passed away a couple of years ago and in my mind, the city of Spokane and the Track & Field and Cross Country worlds lost 3 great men. My father is Herm Caviness who coached at Ferris High School for many years.

Thank you for sharing your father with me all those many years ago. Part of who I am is because of his influence. I am grateful for very fond memories!!

Mr Gmeiner was my 6th grade teacher at Browne Elementary, 51 years ago!! I was just talking to my husband about him the other week...as he allowed me to study before school opened...helping me to build my confidence. He was so patient, and such a gentleman. I also remember him teaching us youngsters how to dance to country music during our PE class, in a fun yet formal way, and he picked me to be his partner, as we all walked around in a big circle...this is the only time I didn't have left feet!! He believed in us, and let us know. What also inspired us all, was when we got answers right, and he would put our initials on the chalkboard, and gave us a +1, for extra credit...or a -1, if one of us misbehaved...or didn't do our homework assignments. This pushed us all to work hard, and make him proud of us. Thank you, Mr Gmeiner, for making a difference in our lives !! We love you

Mr. Gmeiner taught 6th Grade at JJ Browne school when I was a student there in the 1960s, he taught PE classes and had a morning square dance class for 5th and 6th graders. He had a knack for noticing kids who looked like they could run and recruited us for the AAU track team he coached. I think I was 7 or 8 years old when I started running track, probably wearing a scooter skirt and saddle shoes. Soon I had some second hand track shoes and was running 50 yard dash, long jump and relays. One of the memorable experiences during that time was the year that my 220 yd. relay team placed 4th in the nation based on our submitted times and we got to go to the AAU Luncheon at the Ridpath hotel in Spokane. What an exciting experience for a bunch of little girls who each ran 55 yards before we handed off to the next girl. At that AAU luncheon we got to meet world famous Olympian Jesse Owens, and then USC football standout OJ Simpson among other celebrity athletes. I ended up competing in track through my Junior year at Shadle Park high school and went to state that year in the 880 Medley relay where I ran the 220 Yard starting leg. Mr. Gmeiner was ahead of his time in supporting and encouraging female athletes, title IX wasn't put into place until my sophomore year in HS and without the years of track experience inspired by Mr. G I likely would not have turned out in High School. Mr. G was a great coach and certainly made us work hard. I remember he wanted me to run the 440 Yd. in grade school and I think I cried the entire race but I did it because he knew I could. I am so sorry to hear of his passing but happy that he had such a long life. His legacy will be the ways he influenced generations of athletes and students. Thank you Mr. G for your dedication.Blessings to the family.

Mr. Gmeiner was my childhood track coach starting at Browne school then my sister Vicki Lyons and I joined his private track club NW Kiwanis for several years. He was a talented amazing track coach, very dedicated and an inspiration to all. Always practicing "high knees" for sprinting and constantly "relay baton exchanges" He produced many champions in all races and field events!! He just loved our relays!!! So many blue ribbons I remember!!We had such a great time traveling to several invitational meets on the West Coast, tri cities and Kelowna BC. Along with Jr. Olympics and various other meets!
We also competed in many local meets. We used always participate at SCC Open bigfoot meets on Thursday nights during the summer. He also had amazing assistants like the talented sprinter Ray Fabien from Trinidad! He was a great motivated and he caught you slacking he'd yell out your name Lyons get to work" such fun memories with good people! I absolutely loved hanging out with their family members Vernie, Larry, Lynn, Lee and Lonnie along with the
Wallace family and so many others. Neal was always wanting to follow and keep in touch with athletes and their families, later on he even attended my son's highschool football games at Joe Albi along with my dad. I was blessed to attend his 90th birthday party in 2020 and was hoping to be at his 95th in March.
My condolences to all of his remaining family members, he will be thought of and missed for his great devotion and kindness. May he rest in peace with all the Angels whom have gone before him. Love to your whole family and warm memories. Lori Lyons Aspenleiter

Mr. Gmeiner had a profound positive impact on my life.
He introduced me to high jumping, drove me to meets in his van, and believed in me.
He changed my life´s path. I competed in track in high school, college at WSU, also becoming a track and field coach at the college level. Mr. Gmeiner often came to support me and watch me compete in my college meets always encouraging me with his smile and positive energy.
I can honestly say I wouldn´t have achieved all I have personally or professionally if Mr. Gmeiner had not believed in me more than I believed in myself. Thank you Mr. Gmeiner for blessing my life!!!

Always loved coming over from Seattle and staying at there house, we had the greatest times. In the winter we would sled down the big hill in the park or ice skate on the pond. Summers we got to sleep on the deck.

I was so blessed to call this man my Uncle. He had a profound influence on me growing up and well into my adulthood. I will never again see a "Take A Hike" t-shirt again without laughing and thinking of you Uncle Neal.

To a wonderful family,
My heart broke a little today when my mom called to tell me of your dad´s passing and when I read his obituary in the paper. My heart also warmed a lot as I read about him. He was everything you said he was.
As you know, he was one of my dad´s lifelong buddies, both members of that Fairfied gang. My family often kidded dad that Neal was his significant other. We were blessed because of their relationship. Because of it we knew your dad. Because of their relationship we experienced your dad´s love and interest in our lives firsthand. Because of it we knew the four of you. Growing up you four felt like cousins even though we were not related.
I´m glad you knew exactly who your dad was. I hope you find peace and comfort in your shared memories. I will do everything possible to be at his service in July. Until then I will hold you close in my heart and your families as well.
With much love,
Deralyn Adams Nord

I had the privilege of knowing Neal as a daughter in-law , my fondest memories of him was us having breakfast out & I ordered a Coke (as I was never a coffee drinker) then he ordered one for himself and I came to find out that RC Cola was his breakfast drink of choice. It was an instant bonding experience. :) He was always such a champion for his grandchildren, making them each feel so loved in a unique way that only he could. Sending heartfelt condolences to his family, he will be dearly missed.
