Phyllis Jean Sherman, age 94, passed away in peace on July 12, 2023, at River Mountain Village Assisted Living in Newport, WA, surrounded by family, a great friend, and the incredible staff at that facility. And a very special thanks to Dr. Angelika Kraus. Born in Newport, WA, on July 5, 1929, to Darrell and Thelma Holmes, she was a lifelong resident of Newport and Pend Oreille County. Phyllis graduated from Newport High School in the class of 1947. After graduation, she attended business college in Spokane, WA, and worked for many years in Newport as a secretary and administrative assistant. She married her high school sweetheart, David Sherman, and together they co-owned and operated Sherman Funeral Home
until 1992. Phyllis was very involved in the community. She was a member and past president of PEO and Soroptimist, and a member of Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, and the United Church of Christ. She was also an avid golfer and bridge player. She loved her family and was blessed with many long-time friends. She was known as mom and grandma to all the friends of her children and grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Nina McGee, her loving husband of 67 years David Sherman, and her daughter, Janet O'Daniell. She is survived by her brother Darrell "Skip" Holmes (Michelle) of Phoenix, son Rick Sherman (Teresa) of Spokane, foster son Tim Michaels (Donna) of Whitefish, MT, grandchildren Kristen Horlacher (Sven) of Spokane, Rick
Hughes (Marie) of Newport, Kyle Sherman of Spokane, Kendra Woodson (Josh) of Albany, OR; Great-grandchildren Dylan Horlacher, Lilly Hughes, and Berg Hughes; a niece and several nephews. Services will be held on Monday, July 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Sherman-Campbell Funeral Home in
Newport. If you wish, donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane, the United Church of Christ, Newport Schools, or a charitable organization of your choice.
