Richard "Dick" Lauren Spear, born December 11, 1934, in Los Angeles, CA, to Robert and Edith Spear, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 16, 2025, in Spokane, WA. Dick spent much of his childhood hunting, fishing, and trapping. He later graduated from Inglewood High School in 1952. Days after graduation, Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served three years on active duty, attaining the rank of Corporal and seeing combat in the Korean War. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He continued in the Reserves until 1960. Dick later became of member of the VFW – Post 1425.
Dick's civilian career following his military service showcased his extraordinary talents. He enjoyed skin-diving as a hobby and later opened a skin-diving shop in Spokane, WA. Thereafter, he worked as a commercial diver inspecting bridges, dams, and other projects. He later worked in the construction industry as a welder, and as a millwright at Kaiser Aluminum-Trentwood for 25 years until retirement. In retirement, Dick discovered a true passion for wood carving, creating stunning pieces that delighted family, friends, and even strangers who commissioned his work. He also was a member of the Spokane Carvers' Association. But he never lost his love of the outdoors, fishing and camping, along with annual trips to Mazatlán with his wife.
Above all, Dick cherished his family. From his first marriage he had three daughters: Sharon Spear, Melanie Cavazo (Tony), and Brenda Brashears (John). In 1961, he married Nancy Lee Mickey, with whom he shared 42 joyful years and four more daughters: Kathy Harman (Mike), Colleen Montoya (Dennis), Robin Frederick (Jim), and Tari Spear, until Nancy's death in 2004. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Kathryn, Betty, Bud, and Jack, and his wife Nancy. He leaves behind his 'Sister Mother' Judy, his sweetheart Shirley, all of his daughters, 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews; all of whom he treasured.
Dick will be profoundly missed. Rest in Peace, Dad – We love you!
