Ronald WALKER Obituary

WALKER, Ronald L. June 25, 1928 May 10, 2021 A man of many talents; family man, coach, teacher, fisherman, gardener, barbershop trio, golfer, fast pitch catcher, Ron Walker was always eager to give his time and energy to others. He was a Spokane native son, born to Marshall Guy Walker and Olive Melissa (Cupp) Walker. Ron grew up in the Garland District where his Dad owned the Castle Service Station. His father sponsored many of Ron's sports team and club activities. The Garlanders Fast Pitch Softball Team was a favorite and Ron played catcher. The team had a community fan base that supported their neighborhood team. The Dreamers was the name of a singing group that Ron belonged to along with Virg Heidt, and Bud Clary. Radio Station KFIO would broadcast a 30 minute performance featuring The Dreamers. They also attended local dances at The Spot on West First Ave. (A dance club for teens.) Ron graduated from North Central HS, class of 1946, EWSC in 1950 with a BA in Education and served in Counter Intelligence Corp during the Korean War. Ron married his sweetheart, Lona Lea Lindsey, in 1950 and began his teaching career in Aberdeen, WA. He also taught at Finch Elementary in Spokane and North Central HS. But his passion was coaching. He was the NC varsity basketball coach for many years. He also coached tennis, swimming, track and others. Another passion was Priest Lake. He enjoyed fishing, (catching many trophy fish), hiking the backcountry, swimming and boating. He began coming to Priest Lake as a young boy and his family would camp. He and Lea continued coming to Priest Lake renting a summer cabin at Elkins Resort and then Outlet Resort. After being widowed in 1992, Ron found love again and married Ramona Beck. They shared time between Mesa, AZ and Priest Lake, ID. Upon Ramona's death, Ron relocated to Renton to be near his daughters Sherri and Tami and their families. Ron is survived by his daughters Sherri Kull (Larry) and Tamara Kendall (Scott), five grand- children Spencer Kull (Phyllis), Lindsey Kull, Braxton, Mason and Max Kendall and one great-grandchild, Olivia Kull. Also his step daughters Barb Beck (Les) Brenda Parker (Billy) and Bev Glueckert (Steve). Ron's was a life well lived. It was his honor to be a teacher, coach and mentor to so many wonderful students.

Mr Walker was my 6th grade teacher and my 4th through 6th grade coach for football, basketball, and baseball at Finch Elementary. He was kind, strict, and fair and I think a father figure for many of us, especially those who had rough home lives. He never shamed us when he corrected us. He towered over us but made us all feel taller. Thank you Mr Walker
