Stephen M.
(Age 69)

Stephen Michael Swider passed away quietly in his home on October 19, 2016. Steve was born July 25, 1947 in Newport, WA.
At a young age, his family moved to Dyer, Indiana where he graduated from Dyer High School in May 1965. After high school, he felt the call of military service, enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving three years of active duty with one tour in Vietnam, being discharged in 1969 as a Private SP5 with the 1st Signal Brigade. Upon his return, he began a career with the Hughes Aircraft Company in Tucson, Arizona working as part of the team designing and testing the Maverick Missile System until 1989. Along the way, he earned his Associates of Applied Science Degree in Electronics Technology from Pima Community College. With the downturn in the aircraft industry in 1992, Steve returned to Spokane and spent 10 years working for the Pony Express Delivery Service, and during that time he met Carol Robertson. They married in 1994 and began travelling the country delivering vehicles in their retirement jobs. Steve's passions included following Chicago Cub baseball, designing intricate HO model trains and landscapes, and fishing.
Steve is preceded in death by both his parents, Edward and Evelyn Swider, and his stepdaughter, Mary Meese. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carol Swider of Spokane. One brother, Kevin Swider of Ft. Worth, TX and a sister, Pamela Forry of Pasco, WA. A son Michael Michaleson of Plains, TX and one daughter, Shannon Vanderburg of Amarillo, TX. Steve had five grandchildren and four nephews and one niece. The Swider family would like to thank Mitch Jessee for all the years of care he gave Steve as he fought his health issues.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriners Hospital of Spokane, 911 W. 5th Ave. Viewing and family visitation will be at Riplinger Funeral Home on Monday, October 24th from 5-8pm. His cremation service will be held at Riplinger Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 25th at 2:00pm.

I haven't known Steve and Carol all that long - our daughter moved into the apartment complex 2 years ago. I've gotten to know Carol this year while walking our dogs. Steve was so lucky to have her by his side. She never complained about being a caregiver, and always put Steve's needs first. It touched my heart to see her devotion to him. I would help out with MaryLyn when Steve was in the hospital (along with other neighbors), because Carol would spend 10-13 hrs. with him each day. She truly loved him.
