December 29, 1948 - February 21, 2025
Spokane - Sue Simpson passed away peacefully in Spokane on February 21, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. Born to Jack and Virginia Shoemaker in Ohio, on December 29, 1948, Sue grew up in Columbus, graduating from Whetstone High School, before earning a degree in psychology from Ohio University in 1970.
In 1971, Sue embarked on a life-changing journey to Europe. She spent a year working in a hospital in West Germany before traveling to the island of Corfu in Greece, where she met Martin, the love of her life. Their connection proved immediate and enduring, leading Sue to adjust her plans to travel with Martin and connect with his family in England. After Sue returned to Ohio, the couple's daily love letters led to marriage in 1973, marking the beginning of a devoted partnership that would span more than five decades.
Sue and Martin welcomed their first child, Bronwyn, while living in the United States. Shortly after, they moved to England and settled near Oxford for three years, where Sue gave birth to their second child, Jessica. In 1978, the family returned to the United States and built a log cabin above Waitts Lake, where they lived for the next 13 years. During this time, Sue embraced homesteading while raising their daughters and eventually gave birth to two sons, first Arthur, and later William. Their mountain home became a place of love, learning, and adventure for the four children.
As her family grew, Sue began a fulfilling career in social work during the 1990s, dedicating herself to supporting the elderly and individuals with developmental disabilities. She found great purpose in her work at Addus Homecare, and around this time, Sue and her family moved to Spokane, while maintaining the cabin as a secondary property. Later, Sue began working at Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington, where she continued to serve until her retirement in 2016. After retiring, Sue cherished her time in Spokane with family while pursuing lifelong learning through continuing education courses. She also found peace in nature at her cabin where she enjoyed walking, reading, and visiting with neighbors.
Sue's Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was involved in multiple churches throughout her life, engaging in Bible study and fellowship. Above all, she lived out her faith through offering kindness and hospitality to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Sue is survived by her beloved husband, Martin; and their children, Bronwyn (Bob), Jessica (Cory), Arthur (Rachael), and William (Dana); eight cherished grandchildren; her sister, Judy; her brother, Ron; and numerous extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sue's memory to the
Alzheimer's Association or Compassion International.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on April 12, at 2:00 PM, at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church, 5508 N. Alberta Street, Spokane, WA 99205.
