Born to Frederick A. Butte and Mary Ellen Branson Butte, she grew up on a homestead in Belknap, Montana, and attended North Central High School in Spokane and Thompson Falls High School in Thompson Falls, Montana, where she graduated at age 16.
During WWII she worked in the war effort in San Francisco and then at the Spokane Army Air Depot at Fairchild Air Force Base inspecting repairs to aircraft damaged in the Pacific Theater. As the mother of four daughters, she devoted thousands of hours to Girl Scouting over a period of 20 years as a troop leader and neighborhood chairman. She was also a dedicated school volunteer. She loved dancing, was a gardening enthusiast, and was a steadfast fan of the Seattle Mariners. A life-long bookworm, she often read more than a book a week. She took great delight in following the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Harshman Emoto, Stephenville, Texas, Stacie Harshman Lee and Craig W. Lee, Ferndale, Washington, Sheila G. Harshman White and Paul A. White, Herndon, Virginia, and Sharon A.
