News Death Notice

HOLLINGER, Byron E. Age 93 of Goshen, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at The Maples, Goshen, IN, where he had been a resident the last 2 years; in failing health the last 2-3 months. Mr. Hollinger was born November 27, 1915 in Pitsburg, Ohio; he lived the last 4 years in Goshen, 2 at Waterford Crossing Assisted Living, coming from Decatur, Indiana. He married on February 11, 1939 to Marjorie E. Heeter who passed away February 20, 2007. He was a school teacher & coach for 42 1/2 years, starting his career in South Whitley, IN., then at St. Marys, Grandview Heights, Hamilton, Springfield & Elyria school systems, all in Ohio, he worked for the Elyria Board of Education; he officiated basketball 30 yrs, football 27 yrs & baseball 15 yrs.; he retired June, 1981; Graduated from Dixie High School, New Lebanon, OH; member of First United Methodist Church, Springfield, OH; during WWII he served in the US Army as a non-combatant conscientious objector in medical rehabilitation of wounded soldiers; graduated from Manchester College; received his Masters Degree from Ohio State Univ; served as a consultant for Economic Ed. for Secondary Schools at Ohio Univ. for a period of 8 years; Board member of Metro Ministry of the Springfield District; Organized for Clark County Retired Coaches Association 1991-1997; Optimist Club, Phi Delta Kappa & numerous other educational, civic & religious organizations. Preceded in death by his parents William E. & Mollie (Wandle) Hollinger, 2 sons, Craig and Kent Hollinger, 4 brothers, Emmet, Jesse, Lowell & Joe Hollinger. Survived by 3 daughters: Ann (Larry) Fourman of Milford, IN, Janet (Bruce) Strine of Union Bridge, MD, Rebecca (James) Horne of San Carlos, CA; 3 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 sister: Margaret Wells of Lakeland, FL. A memorial service will take place at a later date at Union Center Church of the Brethren, Nappanee. Pastor Tim Waits of the Rock Run Church of the Brethren will officiate.
