Andrew Vrtiak Obituary

Andrew Vrtiak
Andrew Joseph Vrtiak ("Andy") passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Andy was born on March 10, 1939, in Port Chester, NY to Andrew John Vrtiak and Kathleen Drago Vrtiak. He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of 65 years, Judith Haas Vrtiak, his four children: Marina (Richard) Pennella, Matthew (Portia) Vrtiak, Dina (Bradley) Wallace, Kristen (Rocco) Rinzivillo, and his eleven grandchildren: Rachel (Benjamin), Maya (Austen), Jacob, Madison, Brady, Brooke, Riley, Bradley, Braden, Brody, and Ellie. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen Staby and his brother George Vrtiak.
As a lifelong Greenwich resident, Andy attended Greenwich High School where he made many good friendships which were maintained long after his graduation in 1957. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut, a master's degree from Columbia University, and a sixth-year degree in administration from Fairfield University.
Andy began his teaching career at Eastern Junior High School in Greenwich. In 1967 he became part of the coaching staff of the Black Knights football team at Stamford High School, where he served as Head Coach and eventually became Athletic Director. Whenever Andy ran into his thousands of students after their graduation, they remarked that although he was tough when he had to be, he was always fair.
Andy learned to love boating and fishing from his dad, and later he took his friends and family for early morning fishing trips in his boat, The Black Knight.
Andy always had a deep love for reading and he was known for visiting Cos Cob Library at least twice a week. He could be spotted around town reading in his car between business appointments. Andy always looked forward to reading in his favorite vacation spots: Cape Cod and St. Martin.
In 1985, Andy started his own business along with his son, A. Vrtiak and Son Tree Business. He worked every day until his death.
Besides the love for his family and friends, Andy loved his God, Jehovah. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, he loved to share the truths found in God's Word the Bible.
Andy will be remembered for his profound impact on his family, his students, and his community. Although Andy will be deeply missed, his hard work, faith, and love continue to inspire all who knew him.
Saturday, December 21, 2024, the family will be receiving guests from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Memorial talk to follow at 3:00 p.m. Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses GIl Fairfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902.

I woke up this morning thinking about Mr. V. As my gymnastics coach, we team members thought we were in his good graces. He was always a positive presence. A few went on to be state champs. I'm happy to see he a long life with many grandchildren.

I've worked for Andy Vrtiak on and off for over 30 years. Andy was a great guy to work for. He always bought you coffee. He'll be missed.

I crossed paths with Mr. Vrtiak at Eastern Junior High School. Aside from being in his gym class, my memory of him is at early morning gymnastics practice, during which he played, unapologetically, the Mamas and Papas over and over
over again. While I was more of a Soul and R&B fan, I couldn't help but learn to appreciate the group's artistry. Needless to say, I can't help but smile whenever I hear a Mamas and Papas song, which reminds me of him even after all these years. Rest in peace Mr. V.
