John Nicholas Melia
John Nicholas Melia, 51, a resident of Stamford, Connecticut, passed away on April 20th, 2021 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
John was born January 7th, 1970 in Stamford, Connecticut to Nicola and Teresa Melia. He graduated from Stamford Catholic High School in 1987. John received an Associate degree in Culinary Education from Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island and worked as a chef before continuing a career as a driver for City Carting. In 2004, John enlisted in the US Army where he was in active duty at the time of his death as a Sergeant First Class (SFC).
SFC Melia was a well decorated soldier, having received numerous accolades during his 18 years of service to our country including Army Commendation Medal; Joint Service Combat Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Global War on Terrorism Medal; Combat Action Badge; Army Secure Unit Award; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Korea Defense Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; Army Overseas Ribbon; Driver and Mechanic Badge. His career took him across the globe representing the United States, having completed two tours of Iraq, as well as stations in Germany and South Korea. John's roles in the service included track driver, squad leader, assignments on the explosive hazards team, as well as his final posting as a recruiting station commander in Philadelphia.
John was a big friendly giant with a compassionate heart that was double his stature. He was a beloved husband, son, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. John's life work was to be of service to others and can be summarized as "my brother's keeper;" truly, there was no one more concerned for the well-being of his family, friends, community, and country. He felt personally responsible for making sure that everyone was well taken care of and was always the first to answer the call of duty. Above all, John's greatest assignment was being a devoted husband and father to his children.
John survived by his parents Nick and Teresa; his wife Enma; children Teresa Rae (17), Giovanni (3), Santino (6 months); his sister Sarah; his brother Philip; sister-in-law Stacey; nieces and nephews Thomas, Margaret, Gregory, Nicolette, Rachel, Nicholas, Ginamarie, and Ralphie.

I am so depressed upon hearing about this. John worked with me here in Korea on the Counter Improvised Explosives Defeat team for a year, and even after he left to go on recruiting duty we always kept in touch (him often calling me between 10pm to 4am) lol. I remember the day that I went to go pick him up at Camp Hovey. His unit was tasked to provide an NCO for a one year tasking to work with me. Usually when units get tasked they don't send the cream of the crop, but oh what a loss for the BSTB.
When I first met John I was thinking I wasn't probably going to be getting a stellar NCO. I went in to his room to help him start moving his gear and he had 15 padlocked pelican cases which were locked inside a locked closet! I also noticed that he had his wallet, keys and leatherman dummy corded to him. His water bottle with cold coffee that he kept in his back pocket just baffled me everyday!! Oh boy, this is going to be a long year I was thinking, but John was the hardest working NCO I have ever had the privilege of working with. Sometimes he was a little hard-headed, but he always listened to reasoning. He was larger than life and was never afraid to work. He always kept me on my toes and it was never a dull moment with him from instances of being called onto the carpet by LTG Champeaux or signing autographs as Vin Diesel for Chinese tourists up on the DMZ. The ROK Engineer School and interpreters that we had send their condolences to the family and wanted me to pass on their appreciation for all that you did for them. We just talked a few weeks ago about our investments and how you were going to fly back to Korea when you made your million, and pay me for all the great investment advice and stock picks!! I was so looking forward to seeing you again. My deepest sympathy and condolences to your beloved family. I'm gonna miss you. Until we meet again. RIP SFC John Melia. You have left much too early. I salute you. Maybe gone, but never forgotten. SFC (RET) Brian Kerkove
