Leonard Elias Cohn died peacefully on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the age of 100, after a brief illness. Leonard was preceded in death by his brothers Seymour and Bob. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanne; his children, Daya Singh Khalsa (Sat Nirmal Kaur), Janet Cohn (Steve Krantz) and Maggie Cohn (Dean Plummer), and four granddaughters, Hari Simran, Leah, Abby and Nora.
Leonard was born in 1917 in Stamford, CT to Herman and Libby Cohn. He was raised in Stamford, attended Stamford High School and graduated from Yale University in 1937.
He served in the First Engineer Battalion of the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for the North Africa and Sicily campaigns. He later retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. He spent most of hie career working for the retailer B. Altman & Company in New York City, retiring as vice president and comptroller in 1986. Leonard had a wonderful, full life with Jeanne, traveling around the world, playing tennis and spending time with many dear friends. His commitment to social justice for everyone was a lifelong guiding value that he passed on to his children. He enjoyed the performing arts and was especially passionate about classical music. He adored his granddaughters and was extremely proud of each of them.
Leonard's last years were spent with his beloved Jeanne at Kimball Farms Lifecare Community in Lenox, MA. His gentle manner, deep curiosity about others, sharp intellect and warm twinkling smile will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
A memorial service will take place later this year. Donations in his memory would be welcomed by the International Rescue Committee at www.rescue.org
