Eugene "Pug" Matweecha, 89, of McAdoo passed away Monday morning at home.
Born in McAdoo, he was the son of the late Peter and Anna (Maschak) Matweecha, and a member of St. Mary's Ukranian Catholic Church, McAdoo.
As a young man, Pug worked in his father's independent coal mine. He graduated from McAdoo High School in 1949 and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. and served during the Korean War.
After returning from the Marines, Pug worked at various area coal companies, including Hammond Coal Co., Yamulla Coal Co. and Max Smith Coal Co. He was a mechanic for Fauzio Brothers Coal Co., Capparell Coal Co. and Pagnotti Coal Co. Pug was licensed to handle and fire heavy explosives of all kinds. He later retired from PPL, Hazleton, as a master mechanic of heavy equipment.
Pug was a trustee and mechanic for the McAdoo Fire Company. He was senior vice commander for the American Legion and a member of the rifle squad of the McAdoo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6708. Pug was also a member of the United Mine Workers Union, Steel Workers Union and Electrical Workers Union.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Marjorie (Wisgo) Matweecha; brothers, Anthony, Michael, Peter, Paul and Roger Matweecha; and sisters, Martha Pellock and Mary Semasek.
Surviving are his daughter, Jean Ann Matweecha-Majetsky, McAdoo; daughter, Judith M. Palmer and husband, Michael, Allentown; son-in-law, Richard Majetsky, Quakake; grandchildren, Megan Jean Majetsky, Mahanoy City; Michael E. Palmer, Allentown; great-grandson, Carter T. Freil-Majetsky; sister-in-law, Anna Rose Matweecha, Hazleton; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's U.C. Church, McAdoo. The Rev. D. George Worschak will be the celebrant.
Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
A calling hour will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Damiano Funeral Home Inc., McAdoo.
