Joan K. Palermo, wife, mother and grandmother, 88, of Weatherly passed away Monday at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale.
She was born Saturday, Aug. 27, 1932, in Hazleton, the daughter of the late Charles and Thelma (Setzer) Kelshaw.
She was also predeceased by brothers, Herbert J. and Ronald Kelshaw.
Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Charles J. Palermo Sr.; sons, Charles Palermo Jr. and his wife, Nancy, Sugarloaf Twp.; and Karl Palermo and his companion, Ellen Horgan, New Hampshire; daughters, Mary J. Pleban and her husband, Tom, Conyngham; and Carole Panzarella and her husband, Carl, Weatherly; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A 1950 graduate of Weatherly High School, Joan matriculated to Bloomsburg State Teachers College, graduating in 1954. Joan taught elementary English and reading in Weatherly for more than 40 years. A member of Salem United Church of Christ, Weatherly, Joan sang in the choir. Joan was an avid reader, enjoyed watching the Yankees, trips to the casino and was an ardent Derek Jeter fan.
Private funeral arrangements are entrusted to Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 211 First St., Weatherly.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly.
Memorials in her name may be made to the Charles M. Schwab School Restoration Project, P.O. Box 150, Weatherly, PA 18255, or Weatherly Public Library, Brenkman Drive, Weatherly, PA 18255.
