Marlene Ann Warg, 92, of Drums, formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Oct. 16 at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community.
Born in Hazleton on May 14, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Dominic R. and Ethel M. (Curtis) Cassarella.
Marlene graduated from Hazleton High School, Class of 1949. She was a kind, loving wife, mother and grandmother who took pride in being a homemaker and caring for her family. She loved music and dancing, particularly playing the piano and singing, and enjoyed taking trips and shopping with her long-missed cousin, Rosie. Although she graduated from Hazleton High School, she converted and became devoted to West Hazleton High School and the community where her husband, his family and her children all graduated from and lived.
She had multiple interests outside of her home, which included holding, for many years, the position of secretary for the HHS Class of 1949 Reunion Committee. She was an Elks Club officer, part of the CHHIPS organization, a member of the Ladies Aid Society and Choir at the former St. Paul's United Church of Christ in West Hazleton, and a 60-year plus member of the Mayflower Chapter order of Eastern Star. She worked at various places over her life starting out at Reinhart's Furniture Store in the custom Drapery department, then at Tung-Sol in Weatherly. She sold AVON and Bee-line women's clothing and worked at Weis Markets as a Deli manager in her younger years. After she lost her husband, she worked as an assistant activities coordinator for St. Luke's nursing home, and at Amy Stoudt Women's clothing store at the Laurel Mall. Following her husband and his family's commitment to West Hazleton, Marlene volunteered with the League of Women Voters, for the Republican Party in West Hazleton, and served on the board of directors of the Greater Hazleton Joint Sewer Authority for several years.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her beloved husband, Carl W. Warg, in 1981; son, Harold C. Warg, in 2019; brother, William R. Cassarella and his wife, Helen (Wanda); brother, David R. Cassarella and his wife, Dolores (Moran); and cousin, Rose Homa (Lyons).
Surviving are her son, William J. Warg and his wife, Karen (Cassidy), Laurys Station, their children, Michael A. Warg, Morris Plains, N.J.; and Jonathan T. Warg, Madison, N.J.; daughter, Carlene A. Lacy and her husband, Richard Lacy, Parker, Colo., and her daughter, Amanda K. Attick, Parker, Colo.; granddaughters, Katie Warg, Berwick; and Tori Warg, Pottsville; great-granddaughter, Hadley Luebbert; great-grandson, Cooper Frantz; extended family members, Jeffery D.
