Barbara Lewis Obituary
Barbara Ann Griggs Age 63, wife of George C. Lewis of Miller Hollow Road, Town of Chemung, NY, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at the Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY. Born December 26, 1940 in Towanda, PA, she was the daughter of the late Wallace Harold Griggs and Frances Ann Nickeson Griggs. Barbara was a graduate of Towanda High School, Class of 1958. In early years, Barbara was employed by the First National Bank of Bradford County in Towanda. On September 8, 1962, she married George C. Lewis in Towanda, PA. Barbara and George later moved to Corning, NY, where Barbara was employed by the Corning First National Bank. She was later employed by the Elmira Savings Bank in Elmira, NY, for many years until her retirement. Barbara was a member of the Church of the Redeemer in Sayre, PA. Surviving are her husband of 42 years, George C. Lewis at home; her son and daughter-in-law, Craig W. Lewis and Julie Lewis of Chemung, NY; her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Bethann Lewis Strothmann and Jeff Strothmann of Middleport, NY; five grandchildren, Lauren and Justin Strothmann, and Ashley, Sean and Geoffrey Lewis; her brother and sister-in-law, Harry L. Griggs and Abby Griggs of Fort Myers, FL; her sister, Ethel Mae Griggs of Spring Lake Heights, NJ; three nieces, Alicia, Stephanie and Andrea Griggs, all of Fort Myers, FL; several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Ann Griggs on Jan. 21, 1994; her father, Wallace Harold Griggs on Aug. 8, 1998. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre, PA. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 2, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Redeemer in Sayre, with the Rev. Benjamin Lentz, Rector, as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Chemung Cemetery, Chemung, NY. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Strong Memorial Hospital, Cancer Research Unit, 601 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, NY 14642, in Barbara Ann Lewis' memory.
