Artie
After all these years I there are few people that accomplished what you did.
You are a legend. You excelled at all you did. I am proud to have been your friend.

Growing dahlias with Art as a mentor is a favorite memory. Every year Roger and I would make our annual pilgrimage to Lincoln Avenue to exchange plants and tubers. Art always gave more than he received, but I like to think our exchange benefited all. Growing dahlias has not been the same without Art. RIP old friend.

Art
I continue to be so impressed with the many contributions you made to improve lives of residents of Chemung County and your country.
You were also a Champion Golfer. We enjoyed many years at the Mark Twain as members of the Dew Birds golfing association . Your booming voice could be heard all over the course.
We also had great fun playing winter golf at Tomassos in Chemung with many friends.
In my mind You were a local golf legend along with Tony Losito and Dick Fluman who is still playing great at almost 91. I also enjoyed reading Your contributions as the Historian for Chemung County Historical Society.
Job well done.

To Jim, Suzy and the entire Kieffer family and friends, my deep though very late condolences over the loss of a terrific man, Archie.
Researching something about Elmira an hour ago, I came across this obituary. I knew Archie, and saw him often, from 1958 to 1965, or the time I was in seventh grade through my senior year in high school. In high school, he was my CYO basketball coach at St. Casimir's and absolutely terrific at that. He put me on what would become a championship team in 1961 when I was a high school freshman and not very talented at all. I was the last one chosen but Archie – he was the first adult I ever knew who said to call him by his first name – told me to stick with it, I'd get better. He put up a basketball rim and backboard over his garage where he welcomed any of the neighborhood kids to come and shoot anytime. We did, making considerable noise at all hours, but he never complained. Frequently, he watched us from his dahlia garden which abutted the small court. I remember once he gave me a tour of his garden, telling me why he liked the plants so – I don't remember his reasons; no doubt they had to do with the flowers' various colors, sizes and kinds, but his enthusiasm was real. He thought they were magnificent. He was one of the first adults who let me know that magnificent things could exist in this world. Another time while he was working in his garden and I was shooting baskets, he told me that he liked a particular classical singer, Enrico Caruso. Did I know him? No, I said. Then I knew only Chuck Berry and Dion and the Belmonts. He invited him into his house and put on a record. We listened for about three minutes. It was one of the first classical albums I'd ever heard. I didn't know anything about the music but I could hear that Caruso's range was remarkable. Archie listened to it deeply, with real pleasure. Archie was right that I'd get better at basketball if I stuck with it. I lived around the block from Archie's house and more than once I'd join his son Jim, a fine point guard, for an hour or so of lazy shooting. My senior year, I started at forward on our St. Casimir's team. Archie named me one of the team's captains. We won the title that year, too. Archie showed me what one person could do, almost as a matter daily living, as part of their day-to-day lives. His efforts mattered a great deal to me: my father died when I was five and on some level I was constantly on the hunt for good adult males. I I was stunned just now when I read his obituary at all the things he did for Elmira, Chemung County and his country, but on reflection, I'm not. I'm pleased that this man, a great one, lived, worked and gave of himself to my hometown, and that I had a chance to know him.

Art's love for this community, it's people and it's heritage, was infectious. He instilled it well in me and, when I was foundering on the other side of the country, that love helped bring me home.
Thank you Art! You are now a firm part of that rich history.

As perhaps the original "Trolley into Mark Twain Country" driver and narrator back in 1986, Archie was instrumental in helping me create an informative and entertaining tour of the area that lasted for nearly fifteen years. He also promoted the fledgling Chemung County Living History Center for which I am eternally thankful. On a personal note, he knew my Grandfather, Donal O'Buckley, apparently fairly well as a fellow mason and was able to give me great insight into my Grandfather's life and personality that I would otherwise would never have known. Thanks again, Archie!

Archie was more to more people than anyone I have known in Chemung County. He always worked to grow Chemung County. A gentleman always. "May God hold you in the palm of his hand".
We will miss you!

Growing up and living and working in Chemung County most my life I would run into Art in various places and events and he always made me feel connected to that old neighborhood on Lincoln St. It is with sadness that I see his passing because he is no doubt the last of the greatest generation from my childhood. So long Art you left a lot to be remembered .

Our heartfelt condolences goes out to the family of my very dear friend "Archie." We became instant friends from when I first became a County Legislator, a friendship which continued when he became the Chemung County Historian and even after he retired. I attended many of his Historical Dedications/Functions, throughout the County. Now he will be joining his "Sophie" whom he was very loyal to, up until the end. They both enjoyed watching baseball games together, when Sophie was a resident at the CCNF. I was honored to be giving a copy of Archie's History. When I hear the bells chiming down town Elmira, I will know you are looking down upon us, my dear & close friend.

I met Art and Sophie Kieffer when I was new in dahlias and they would come to the National Capital Dahlia Society shows each year. Art and Sophie normally won most of the top honors. They were magicians with dahlias. Sophie taught me how to arrange multiple blooms in a single vase for 3 bloom entries. What I'll always recall is how gracious Art was in accepting awards. He always complimented everyone, and every prize was beautiful (no matter how ugly it really was). Art was one of the kindest men I ever met, and Sophie was also gracious. Watching them was a lesson on how best to relate to others.

It is hard to imagine how anyone could have given more to his community and country than Archie. Every time the courthouse bells ring, we will remember the man who did so much to build and honor Chemung County.

Art, Sophie and I have been dahlia friends for more than 40 years. They were great growers and exhibitors. Even after Sophie's passing I thought of them as a team. Art was larger than life and lit up any dahlia show that he attended. Even his miniature dahlia introductions grew slightly more than the 4 inch limit. Their orchid dahlia Honka, has been a standard and parent for decades. I know I express the condolences from his dahlia/ADS family.

The community lost one of its greatest gems. Archie could always put a smile on my face and of course he always got a hug and kiss on the cheek back. We sat one day and we looked through his photo album of flowers and I was impressed and will always. cherish that memory. My condolences to Archie's family and all that loved him for there were many

RIP and job well done to my old friend Art. Condolences to his family
We were golf buddies for many years at Mark Twain with the Dewbirds and at Tomasso's for the winter tour. His booming voice could be heard from hole 1-18.
Art was a terrific golfer. He and Mark Young won the CCC championship flight at their annual best ball. Art was responsible for the golf holes at Harris Hill and the lovely bells you hear ringing every day at the Elmira Court House
The man was a force of life and will be missed. Remember him each time the bells ring.
