John Dunphy Obituary

Dunphy, John J.

John J. Dunphy of Phoenix, AZ, and formerly of Corning, NY, an old sea dog and accomplished story teller, died at age 76 on December 16th, 2014. John married Suzanne Scheuer Dunphy in 1962 and Margaret O'Brien Dunphy in 1976. He was preceded in death by Suzanne and Margaret. He is survived by one daughter, Megan (Edward) Dunphy Macdonald of West Hartford, CT; two sons, Peter (Monica) Dunphy of Hingham, MA and Keven (Jacqueline) Dunphy of Singapore; one sister, Kathleen Nolan of Mill Valley, CA. John was blessed as the grandfather of seven; Dylan, Ciara, Sosanna, Emma, Owen, Alexander John, and is now rejoined with his angelic granddaughter, Catherine Suzanne. John was born on August 29, 1938 in Medford, MA. He grew up with his two sisters, Kathleen Nolan of Mill Valley, CA, and Margaret Dunphy, deceased. His parents William and Margaret were greatly relieved that John's passion for playing hockey did not interfere with his graduation from Malden Catholic High School. John was a proud graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy where he received a degree in Navigation and Seamanship. While attending MMA, John served as the Commander of the Corp. His unique graduation distinction of receiving the highest award in leadership while completing his time at MMA without receipt of a demerit was a recognition often repeated to his children. As his first job after college, John traveled the world piloting ships for the United Fruit Company. After several years of sea duty, he relocated to Queens, NY, where he met his first wife Suzanne Scheuer Dunphy. They were married in 1962. With active encouragement from Suzanne, John landed a job working at night piloting ships through the New York harbor while attending Columbia Business School during the day, earning an MBA in International Business. After the completion of graduate study in 1965, John was hired by Corning Glass Works. As an executive for Corning, John was extremely proud of his leadership working across a variety of product, market and businesses development ventures along with executive business management, technology and strategy integration positions. His time with Corning was notable through his contributions as Corning Ware Marketing Manager, Optical Products - Serengeti sunglasses, Advanced Products - Memory and Corning's foray into ceramics in dentistry. After 32 years of heading home only after the whistle blew, he retired from Corning Inc. in 1997 as Vice President, Process Owner, Technology Management, Specialty Materials Group. John was also a proud past board member of John G. Ullman and Associates, a financial management company based in Corning, NY. John and Suzanne were raising three kids in Corning when Suzanne passed in 1975. John met the kids' stepmother, Margaret O'Brien Dunphy, at work. John and Peg were married in 1976. They continued to live in Corning until they retired to Phoenix, AZ, where they enjoyed the desert climate and cheered on the Bills from afar until Peg's passing in 2004. Calling hours will be held today, Saturday December 20th from 10 AM until 12 Noon at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. 216 E. First Street in Corning followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church on State Street in Corning at 12:30 PM. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery Annex off Delevan Avenue. Dear Peter, Keven and Megan
I was saddened to learn of your father's passing. I hadn't seen him since my visit with him and Peg in 2000 but we exchanged Christmas greetings every year and I had wondered why I didn't hear form him this year when I received a note from Patty Walker telling me of his death. He was a most accomplished man and a wonderful friend to all. David, Stephen, Michael and I extend our deepest sympathy and remember so well all of the days in Corning when the six of you had many adventures in Pinewood Acres. All the best, Judy Rogers

Remember John well. Worked with him at Corning Inc. He was well liked and I enjoyed working with him and his wife Peg. Wish I had know he was in Phoenix - would have gotten together with him.
