Lopreste, Joseph Anthony

Joseph Anthony Lopreste, 85, Waverly, NY passed away Wednesday evening, June 18, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family following declining health. "Joe" as he was known by his family and friends was born in Williamsport, PA on December 27, 1928 the son of the late Anthony and Margaret Esposito Lopreste. His family moved to the south side of Elmira, NY when Joe was a young boy. He attended school in Elmira until he entered the US Army in 1946 and served his country during Korean War. Joe moved to Waverly in the 1960's. Joe was employed by The Hilliard Corporation in Elmira, NY for 35 years retiring in 1990. Joe and his wife Shirley enjoyed Rving and enjoyed many trips to Myrtle Beach with their motorhome before purchasing a second home there. They were members for 20 years of the Pennymixers Camping Group. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shirley Kryger Lopreste at home, his children; Joseph T. (Margo) Lopreste of Waverly, Lonnie (Diane) Lopreste of Waverly, Rickey Lopreste of Spencer and Gary (Denise) Lopreste of Binghamton; stepchildren, Diane (Lonnie) Lopreste of Waverly, Donna (Brian) Stanton of Chemung, Keith (Kim) Corneby of Barton, Kevin (Carol) Corneby of Arlington, VA and David (Camille) Corneby of Owego; grandchildren, Aaron Lopreste of Georgia, Christopher Lopreste of Waverly, Nathan Lopreste of Vestal, Denille Hammond of Athens, Brett Lopreste and Stephaine Lopreste of Waverly, Brandy Lopreste of Johnson City; several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Frank (Lorraine) Barilla of Oswego, NY; sisters, Carmella VanResselear of Pine City, NY, Rose Mosher of Newtown, PA and Theresa (Joe) Witchtowski of Lake Placid, NY as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and his loving canine companion, Zoe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Joseph Barilla; grandson, Erik Waite; special brother, Dominic Lopreste and sister, Marie Scaife. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, June 22, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St. Sayre, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Waverly, NY with Father Brian Carpenter as celebrant. Interment will follow in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA with the Valley Color Guard according full military honors. The family suggests that contributions be directed to the Stray Haven Humane Society, 194 Shepard Road, Waverly, NY 14892 in Joseph Anthony Lopreste's memory.
