Stephen Beckwith Obituary

Beckwith, Stephen M.

Age 58 of Phoenixville, PA, formerly of Horseheads, NY, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2013 surrounded by family and friends at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, PA after an extended illness. He was born January 5, 1955 in Elmira, NY, son of the late James P. and Mary Rita (Hourigan) Beckwith. Steve is survived by his sister, Virginia Green of Albany, NY with children Meghan and Jamie; brother, Michael (Mary) Beckwith of Bluffton, SC with daughter Jennifer; brother Jeff Beckwith (Marianne Diehl) of Elmira, NY; sister, Sue (Peter) King of Redlands, CA, with children Morgen, Shannon, Molly, Sean and great nephew Jamison along with several aunts, uncles and cousins. Steve lived life with a sense of humor and a smile for everyone. His educational background which included a Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration enable him to pursue his passion of helping others, working extensively with the emotionally and physically disabled. Steve was also an avid sports enthusiast with a special passion for bowling and horseshoes, holding several titles in both sports. A Memorial Service celebrating Steve's life was held in Phoenixville, PA, on April 10, 2013, officiated by his Pastor, Dave Hakes. A Memorial Mass of Remembrance and interment in St. Peter and Paul's cemetery will be held at a future date. A special thank you to all of Steve's friends who continuously sent him cards and letters of encouragement while in the hospital. The family would also like to thank the tremendous group of friends Steve had in the Phoenixville area, all of whom were extremely supportive of Steve and his family throughout his illness. Due to Steve's strong commitment to his religious beliefs the family asks that donations be made in Steve's memory to the church he attended and loved, Daybreak Community Church, PO Box 589, Royersford, PA 19468.

We were saddened to learn of Steve's passing. I have fond childhood memories of playing sports with Steve and hanging out as kids in the neighborhood. We hope that your memories of Steve bring you comfort during this difficult time. Our prayers are with you and your families during this time.

It takes a special kinda person to work with mentally or physically disabled people. they view the world so differently from others almost as if they live in a cloud of ignorance and innocence and because of their limitations, it takes great personal sacrifice to really be of assistance. Stephen is one of those remarkable people. He followed Jesus's Christ golden rule "there's more happiness in giving then there is in receiving". I hope God will give you comfort and peace during this difficult time.

I consider myself lucky to have known Steve since First Grade at St. Mary's. Not often do you grow up being able to know such a kind and gentle soul. He always called me CHER and I loved the humor of it and hold that dear. I have been blessed by knowing him. Steve...if you are listening...you will know what this means...You amounted to EVERYTHING!

To all the Beckwith family. Sorry to hear that we all lost a fine man in Steve. I taught all the kids at Horseheads in 8th gr. science. All were wonderful & well-behaved good students. A tribute to their parents whom I knew, enjoyed working with mom Mary Rita parttime at W.T.Grants. Steve set a good example for others. He will be missed. May the Peace of the Lord be with you all. To Steve's sister and kids, I am saddened to read of Steve's passing. I played ball with him as a youth, and during the years, we stayed occasionally in touch, but I was not aware he was sick, though a lack of postings on FB about the Yankees should have alerted me. I am so sorry.
