Thomas Meier Obituary

Meier, Dr. Thomas Keith

Retired President of Elmira College, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at age 76. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate and intercollegiate athlete at the University of Texas at Austin, he was a First Lieutenant US Army. An outstanding advocate for higher education, he received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University in English Literature and Masters of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.

While serving as an executive with Exxon, he taught night classes at nearby colleges and wrote dozens of articles and published a book on Daniel Defoe. He went on to become President of Castleton State College in Vermont for eight years, and then accepted the presidency of Elmira College in 1987. He thoroughly enjoyed his years at EC with a special affinity for students and the educational process.

Tom loved life, his family, Elmira College, the Boy Scouts, God, and his country. He lived life to the absolute fullest. (His favorite saying was: "If it is worth doing, it is worth overdoing!") And he reached out in every direction. If he became involved in an activity, he worked his absolute hardest to ensure that organization's success.

His dedication and hard work resulted in numerous recognitions: he was an Eagle Scout, he served as President of the Five Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America being selected to receive the Boy Scout Distinguished Citizen award, as well as the Silver Beaver and the National Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. He was awarded the highest civilian honor, the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, for his support of US Army ROTC at Elmira College. He was President of Elmira City Club, Chairman of the Chemung County United Way Board of Directors, board member of Notre Dame High School, Arnot Art Museum, Chemung Canal Trust Co., Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, and Southern Tier Economic Growth.

Tom loved people, his sports cars, the Boy Scouts, hunting (just got a 22 point buck two weeks ago!), skiing (even last winter), reading and talking politics, going to breakfast every day with friends, working with different non-profit organizations, and telling old stories, and laughing and laughing. He will be greatly missed.

Tom is survived by his beloved family, his wife Mila, and sons and beloved daughters-in-law, John and Christine Meier, with children, Madeleine, Alexandra, and Gavin; and Keith and Susan Meier, with daughters, Olivia, Katherine, and Abigail. He is also survived by his brother Donald Keith St. Martin of Austin, TX; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Cathy and John Adams of North Zulch, TX,; nephews and niece with their families, Ryan and Brenda Adams of Somerville, MA with children, Eleanor and Dorian; Vincent and Renata Adams of Norfolk, VA with son Ian; Katherine and Jason Klug of North Zulch, TX.

Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Burial Office will be offered at Grace Episcopal Church, 375 W. Church Street, Elmira, on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Military honors will be accorded outside the church at the conclusion of the service. Committal prayers and interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Rest in Peace, Tom. Heaven just got a lot more fun!

Mila: It has been special for me to know you and Tom via the Board of Trustees and in recent years via the NYC University Club! I just learned today of his passing. It was always fun seeing Tom, he had such a great sense of humor to go along with the so many other wonderful things that made up his sparkling personality! It was just a month or two ago that we met on the front steps of the UC.

If your travels bring you to NYC, please let me know such that I may treat you to an UC dinner!

With great fondness for all!

Mila & Family, Your loss is our loss. Tom, was one of the finest persons I have ever known. He treated me with the utmost of respect. In my opinion Elmira College will never be able to find a College President of his calibre. Tom, my good friend Rest-in-Peace. Sid

IN HIS OWN WORDS

What an honor for me (astonishing!)
to finally graduate
with you the Class of 2012...
Today we celebrate!
It's been a wonderful 25 years,
my heartfelt declaration...
Guiding this small great college,
this maverick in education.
The FIRST to grant women college degrees
equal to those given men,
What a worthy and noble beginning,
rare ideal of Simeon Ben."

"Get involved in something so vast,
so vast you never get done...
Commencement is not destination,
signals life-long learning's begun.
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!
(should stand you in good stead)
Final advice that worked for ME
'fore I bid y'all Godspeed?
Do not hesitate to marry someone
who's smarter than YOU are!
Be prepared, the Boyscout motto...
(contribution to your tip jar) "

Rest In Peace, Dr. Meyer, and thank-you.

Dr. Meier's love for the students and the traditions of Elmira College were so admirable. For 20 years after my graduation, I would see him out and about, and he'd still remember my name. I have always had the utmost respect for dear Dr. Mila Meier, for so many reasons, and who remembers me by name all these years as well. Mila, may you be richly blessed for all you did for us and for Elmira College. My heartfelt condolences to you and all your loved ones.

My thoughts and prayers are with our other beloved Dr. Meier, Mila, and all his family and friends. Dr. Meier was very special to me during my time at EC and taught me so many things as I worked closely with him and watched him work. As I read what others are sharing I realize that he became special to everyone because he made every one of us feel special!! Leaders and mentors like that are rare gems and I am forever grateful for having known such a selfless, lovIng, generous, intelligent, strong person! Combine that with Mila's warmth and charm and we had the perfect "parents" of our EC family!

Dr. Meier certainly made Elmira College "grrreeaat" as he would say. He always remembered everyone's name and instilled many traditions which we all will never forget. From singing on his front lawn to eating Mila's cookies, college was more than just an academic experience at Elmira. We are thinking of Mila and the entire Meier family.

Sincere condolences to the Meier family. As the mother of a member of the Lucky class of 2013, I had the privilege and pleasure of getting to know Dr. Meier. Dr. Meier WAS Elmira College. His genuine love of the college and her staff and students was always fully evident. While most students at most institutes of higher learning couldn't pick their college president out of a line-up, Dr. Meier was everywhere, usually accompanied by Mrs. Meier, also much loved by students. You couldn't help but join in his joy in the rich college traditions and in his sense of wonder and fun. I will be forever grateful that my daughter got to experience the Meier magic during her time at the college.
Heaven just got a lot more fun. I know the angels have linked arms to sing and sway. Be it ever so.
