Anne R. Butt

1934 - 2023

Anne Rountree Butt, 89, of Hurlock, MD, passed away on July 29, 2023, at Bayleigh Chase in Easton,

MD. She was born on July 26, 1934, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., to the late

Stewart Rountree and Frances Brown Rountree.

She moved to the Hobbsville, NC, area at the age of twelve and attended Hobbsville grammar and

high schools and was a star basketball player for the high school team. Anne attended East Carolina

College.

Anne married Lucious Calvin (Cal) Butt of Perquimans County, NC, in 1954. She moved around the

country and overseas with Cal, an officer in the U.S. Air Force, making a home for the family wherever

they were stationed. Anne worked as a secretary at many of these locations. She was active in

military wives organizations, a volunteer in her childrens' schools, a Girl Scout leader, and a docent

with the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.

She and Cal moved to Hurlock full-time in 1992. They enjoyed traveling, and she was an active

volunteer at Unity-Washington U.M.C. and a member of the Deborah Circle. Anne was also a member

of the Community Club of Preston, a volunteer at Vienna Elementary School, and a reading mentor at

North Dorchester Middle School.

Anne is survived by her husband, Cal, and daughters Catherine Grifiths and her husband, David, of

Mechanic Falls, ME, and JoAnne Cottrell and her husband, James, of Elkridge, MD. She was proud of

her four grandchildren and their families: William and Jessica Lynn (Timmreck) Griffiths of

Washington, D.C.; Richard Griffiths of Mechanic Falls, ME; Sara Cottrell and fiancé Ryan Doll of Austin,

TX; and Erin Lynn (Cottrell) Kelly and Joesph Kelly III of Crofton, MD. Anne and Cal also recently

welcomed two great-grandchildren to the family.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 3, at 1:00 p.m. at Zeller Funeral Home in East New

Market, MD, where friends may visit from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. A committal service will be held at 2:00

p.m. at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery at Hurlock.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Anne's memory be made to the Scholarship Fund

at Unity Washington U.M.C., P. O. Box 298, Hurlock MD 21643. Arrangements are in the care of Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market.
