Doris Wanex Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Doris Gwendoyln Wanex. "Gwen," died on July 21, 2025, at Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, Maryland. She was born on November 17, 1937 to Charles G. Era and Bertie Wheatley Era of East New Market, Maryland. Her class was the first graduating class of North Dorchester High School in 1955. She assisted in selecting the school colors and mascot. In addition, she was a member of the basketball team and Glee Club. After attending, Goldey-Beacom School of Business, she worked diligently at the National Radio Institute in Washington D.C.
She returned to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to marry the love of her life, Joseph L. Wanex ("Sunny") on September 26, 1959. A farmer's wife, she raised four children and managed numerous family farms. She was a proud bus driver for Saints Peter and Paul Catholic school where she drove her "other children" for seventeen years. She and Sunny were lifelong parishioners of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. She was a member of the Sodality of Our Lady and she spent time volunteering with bingo and spaghetti dinners. She enjoyed swing dancing, reading, gardening, bird-watching and ice skating on Powell's Pond and the Warwick River. In her later years, she was an avid Raven's fan. Most of all, she greatly treasured spending time with her family.
She is survived by her sister Margaret "Peggy" Rebstock, her brother Herbert "Sonny" Era and her children Sonia Dutt, Pamela Lidowski (Jim), Chad Wanex (Jane), and Matt Wanex (Beth), her grandchildren Josh Dutt, Sheila Edwards, Pria Dutt, Tia Lidowski, Caroline Wanex, Olivia Wanex, Jackson Wanex, Chase Wanex, and Sophie Wanex, her great-grandchildren Boston Edwards, Sutton Edwards. Arya Dutt and Brody Edwards. She is preceded in death by her husband Sunny Wanex with whom she shared 61 years of marriage with, as well as her parents and two brothers Donald and Charles Era.
The family will receive friends at Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market, MD on Monday, July 28th from 6 pm - 8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 29th at 11 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Secretary, MD the interment will follow in the church cemetery. Gwen will be remembered for her all encompassing love, her infectious laugh and her zest for life.
