Edwin Roy Sullivan, Jr., 77, of
Frederick, Maryland, passed away on March 18, 2024, at Frederick Health. Born on December 28, 1946, in
Trappe, Maryland, he was the son of the late Edwin Roy Sullivan, Sr., and Gladys Ruby Flint Sullivan. Ed, affectionately known as "Butch," spent his formative years on the Eastern Shore of Maryland until the late 1950s, after which his family relocated to
Wilmington, Delaware.
Ed attended John Dickinson High School and upon graduating in 1964, briefly attended The University of Alabama before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1967. He served with pride and dedication until his retirement in 2006 achieving the rank of Master Sergeant E7, Flight Examiner Loadmaster on C-130 and C-5 cargo planes. During his career, he served in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Operation Just Cause and Bosnia conflicts. Throughout his distinguished 39-year military career, Ed's assignments took him to over 125 countries, fostering his deep appreciation for travel and cultural exchange. He delighted in regaling others with anecdotes from his extensive experiences.
In pursuit of knowledge, Ed pursued further education, graduating from Gaston College in
Gastonia, North Carolina, in 1978. A voracious reader, his extensive collection of books and periodicals reflected his diverse interests. Music was another passion of his, with a broad spectrum of artists, including Pat Metheny, Mannheim Steamroller, and Led Zeppelin, filling his home with melodies.
Ed's enthusiasm for automobiles, particularly Corvettes and high-performance vehicles, led to a cherished hobby of collecting model cars. His collection stood as a testament to his lifelong fascination with automotive engineering.
Despite his global adventures, Ed retained a deep connection to his roots in
Trappe, Maryland. He cherished the memories of his early years, often engaging in community activities such as playing Jarts, hosting cookouts, churning homemade ice cream, and crabbing for Blue Crabs. It was in these simple pleasures that he found his true sense of belonging.
Edwin Roy Sullivan, Jr., is survived by his daughters, Amy Sullivan of
Charlotte, North Carolina, and Jill Weaver of
Raleigh, North Carolina, along with her spouse, Eric Weaver. He is preceded in death by his wife Lois Benjamin.
In remembrance of Ed's life, his family requests that any memorial contributions be made to Operation: Coming Home a 501-c3 non-profit organization. This is a joint volunteer project by the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County and the United States Veterans Corps. The project builds and donates homes for combat injured troops and families of fallen troops. A memorial service will be held for family and close friends to celebrate Ed's life and honor his memory on Monday, March 25th, 2024, at 11:00AM at Trappe United Methodist Church located at 29421 E. Maple Avenue, Trappe, MD. A graveside ceremony to follow at Oxford Cemetery located in
Oxford, MD. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
