Eleanor Cadwalader Obituary
She graduated from The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore and attended junior college in upper New York state.
She was a long-time resident of Gibson Island where she and her husband, David B. Baker, Jr, moved in 1954. In 1976, they acquired the historic home 'Webley' outside of St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore which was in sad need of repair. For the next 24 years, they split their time between a second home in Baltimore and Webley which, over time, they restored to much of its former grace. Throughout the entire restoration, she had been a glowing hostess to numerous events for family and friends so that many have felt a part of the transformation of the house. They celebrated 50 years of marriage and Dave died in 2000.
Eleanor loved her flower gardens and was a member of the Amateur Garden Club in Baltimore. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames of America, Chapter 1, where she served as president 1994-1998. As a past President of the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage she opened her own home and put Webley on the tour.
In October of 2003, Eleanor married William Dodsworth deCamp, a friend of many years. Bill passed away in 2005.
In June of 2007, she married Benjamin Read Cadwalader. With only two weeks notice to family and friends and no invitations sent out, over 160 people attended the ceremony. They were married for 15 years. Eleanor was predeceased by Ben in 2018. She is survived by her children Nina B. Neal, Mary M. Bagley, David B. Baker, III, Charles Bagley IV; grandchildren Clara C. Baker, Catherine B. Evans, Natalie Hazlehurst and David B. Baker, IV and great grandchildren Walter Capehart Baker and Cullen Lansdale Baker.
A celebration in honor of Eleanor will be held at 2PM on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Webley.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Christ Episcopal Church in St Michaels.
