Jacob A. Gibson, Jr., age 94, of Cordova, MD, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the University of MD Shore Medical Center in Easton, MD.
He was born in Easton Memorial Hospital on August 26, 1928, and was the son of the late Jacob A. and Margaret DeFord Gibson. Mr. Gibson was a 1945 graduate of Tri-County High School. After graduation, he worked for Horace Morgan about one and a half years before attending Strayer's Business College in Baltimore, MD. Upon completion of the general business course, he worked for two years at Capital Airlines in Baltimore. As a member of the Marine Corps reserve, he was called to active duty for 16 months during the Korean Conflict.
When that tour of duty was over, J.E. Greiner Company employed him as a construction inspector on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for nine months until bad weather caused the job to be shut down. He then went to work at E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, DE. While at DuPont, he attended night school at the University of Delaware for two years, then full-time as an Engineer Major for one and a half years. During his third semester, he worked at the Haveg Corporation, whose claim to fame was making the nose cone of a ceramic like material which was practically indestructible for the first space capsules.
After his second semester at Delaware, he took summer school courses at the University of Pennsylvania and discovered colleges are not all alike. The Veterans Administration tested him and found that his aptitude was much better for business than engineering. Upon completion of a summer school course at Syracuse University, he went to the University of Delaware, then transferred to Washington College in Chestertown. Washington College did not accept some of his engineering credits, so he took courses at Syracuse University, Temple University, and West Chester University to catch up. While at Washington College, he worked at the Haveg Corporation. He graduated in 1960 as an economics major and started to work at Wilmington Trust Company from where he retired in 1988.
Mr. Gibson is survived by his daughter, Deborah Kiernan; a son, David Gibson; and a granddaughter, Emily Kiernan. He is also survived by two brothers, John Lee Gibson and Malcolm Graeme Gibson; a sister, Mary Lou Winstead; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane G. Gibson, in 2023 and his sister, Carolyn Faye Connolly, in 2016.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 28, 10 a.m. at St. Christopher's Catholic Church, 1861 Harbor Drive in Chester, MD. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to TomCat Solutions, Inc., 7865 Woodland Circle, Easton, MD 21601.
