William Batchelor Obituary
He was born on February 6, 1936, and raised in Rock Hall, the son of Frances H. and William H. Batchelor. Bill, as he was known by his friends, made the US Air Force his career, joining in 1952 and retiring from Langley AFB in 1974, completing 22 years of service. After retiring from the Air Force, Bill moved to Gloucester, Va. with his first wife of 33 years, Sachiko, working as a Community Center Director in Hampton, VA., a sports, a recreational specialist at Bolling AFB, Washington DC., and a tour bus driver for Tourtime America in Hayes, VA., before retiring again in 2007. He returned to the Eastern Shore in 2008 after 33 years in Gloucester and the passing of his second wife, Sandra Shields Batchelor.
During his years in the service, Bill was a student of judo, aikido, karate, and jiu jitsu, rising to the rank of 5th degree black belt in judo. He also served on the Board of Governor National American Athletic Union (AAU) for Judo representing Central California, was a tournament director for Pacific Air Forces Base, and a hand to hand combat instructor.
For the last ten years, Bill would routinely have coffee with George Tyler and two of their best friends.
He is survived by his ex-wife and friend, Sachiko Batchelor and predeceased by his second wife of six years, Sandra Shields Batchelor, in 2007.
He is survived by his children: Thomas E. Batchelor (wife, Juli) of Wartrace, TN, John H. Batchelor (wife, Mary) of Hayes, VA, and Frances Mazzatenta (husband, Chris) of Leesburg, VA; two sisters, Frances Adkins (husband, Barry) of Cambridge, MD and Helen Ivy Batchelor of Cambridge, MD; and six grandchildren: Jacob, Joshua, Sarah, Noah, John Colin, and Sofia.
Services will be held on Friday, November 18 at 11:00 am at the Eastern Shore Veteran's Cemetery in Hurlock, MD.
In lieu of flowers contribution in his memory may be made to K9's for Warriors.
