Ellen Heltzel Obituary

Ellen Hossley Heltzel

November 19, 1935 - May 20, 2025

Ellen Hossley Heltzel, 89, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her family on May 20, 2025, at The Culpeper Senior Living Community. She was a faithful member of Culpeper Baptist Church, serving on committees, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and enjoying years of loving friendships in The Ruth Sunday School Class.

Ellen was a lifelong resident of Culpeper and was a 1954 graduate of Culpeper County High School. She attended both Mars Hill College and Mary Washington College. She worked at VDOT, and then for many years at the Culpeper Commissioner of Revenue's office and was Deputy Commissioner before retirement.

Ellen was a devoted homemaker and loved caring and providing for her family. She demonstrated her creativity through quilting, especially when her grandchildren were young. She had an avid love of reading. Her greatest joys in life were her husband, family, and longtime neighbors and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Earl Grant Heltzel, her parents William Henry Hossley, Jr. and Cornelia Warren Hossley, her sister and brother-in-law Lora Hossley Spicer and Melvin Spicer, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Barbara Carpenter Heltzel and Roy Franklin Heltzel. She is survived by her children, Jamie Pittman (Jim), Kristi Woods (Gary), and Dennis Heltzel (Jean). She is also survived by grandchildren Lindsay Whalen (Kyle), Lauren Woods, Carly Heltzel, Lee Woods, and Wesley Heltzel, and great-grandsons Lewis and Charles Whalen, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, May 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Culpeper Baptist Church. Visitation will be prior to the service, at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

The family would like to thank all the wonderful people in Memory Care at The Culpeper and Piedmont Hospice for the loving care they showed Ellen and her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S West Street, Culpeper, VA 22701.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Ellen's family. I always enjoyed my visits with Ellen sharing things we did growing up, my flowers and magazines with her. She will be missed.

I had occasion to work with Ellen some when I first moved to Virginia and got a job with Culpeper County. While I did not get to directly work with her on a daily basis, the communication I had with her was always positive and appreciated. She was very helpful in working on our benefits offerings for employees and I always appreciated her thoughtful and helpful contributions in that area as well. Rest in peace, Ellen!
